Winston-Salem, N.C. - The No.1-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated No.16 Virginia, 5-1 in round one of the ACC Tournament Thursday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Deacons advance to the second round of the tournament to face the top-seeded Tarheels, Friday at 7 pm. Wake Forest improves to 16-2 on the season while Virginia falls to 10-10.

"This was an excellent game," said Deacon head coach Jennifer Averill. "We did a better job of perfecting our offensive and defensive plays. We finished when we needed to. After they scored and the game was 2-1, they really put the pressure on us, but I think we stepped it up and played more poised and took advantage of some opportunities."

The Deacs outshot the Cavaliers 13-0 in the first half and took three penalty corners to Virginia's one. Kelly Dostal got her team on the board 7:39 into the game with her 25th goal of the season. The goal came on the first Deacon corner of the game. Maeke Boreel was credited with the assist as Wake Forest went into the break with the 1-0 edge.

Just over a minute into the second period, Kristi Harshman dribbled into the circle, beating several Cavalier defenders. She slipped the ball past Virginia keeper, Logan Carr to put Wake up by two. It was Harshman's third goal of the season.

Virginia was able to answer in the next minute. After a failed Cavalier corner attempt, the ball came back out of the circle and Katie Phillips brought it back to the edge where she flicked it over Deacon keeper Kristina Gagliardi's head, to bring the game within one.

The Deacs stepped it up in the following minutes. Sophomore Haley Scott netted her sixth goal of the season to give the Deacons a two point cushion. Dostal was credited with an assist on the goal. Lauren Crandall zipped one in on a Deacon penalty corner at the 59:11 mark. Boreel and Claire Laubach were credited with assists.

With the 4-1 lead, the Deacons controlled the ball and the tempo. Dostal added her 26th goal of the season to secure the win, 5-1. She is now tied in the nation for the lead in goals and owns the record in points this season. With two goals and one assist in today's game, she has 68 points in 2004, shattering her own Deacon record of 63 set last season.

Wake Forest outshot the Cavaliers 29-1. Carr posted nine saves for Virginia but it was not enough as the Deacons defeated their ACC rival for the eighth consecutive time. Wake Forest advances to round two of the ACC Tournament and will face No.1 seed North Carolina, Friday at 7 pm.
