WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team defeated No. 15 California 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium. Wake Forest is now 14-2 heading into the final portion of the regular season schedule which ends on the road with Virginia, Boston College and Dartmouth.

California now moves to 11-3 for 2008, taking its first loss in October play.

Michelle Kasold scored the game-winning goal just under 16 minutes into regulation. Minou Gimbrere started the play at the top of the circle, passing the ball to Aileen Davis who fired the shot through the center. Kasold made the final tap to send the ball past the California goalkeeper Kelly Knoche.

Knoche had six saves though Wake's 12 shots. Wake Forest goalkeeper Crystal Duffield logged four saves in the contest, including a save in a one-on-one situation during the first half, allowing the Demon Deacons to hold onto their one goal lead.

Out of the halftime break both teams stepped up attack and aggression. California had two cards in the second half and held Wake Forest to five shots and three penalty corners, while Knoche logged four of her six saves during the final 35 minutes.

Next up for the Demon Deacons is a road match with conference rival Virginia at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 25.
