Oct. 4, 2008 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 3 Wake Forest field hockey team was upended by No. 4 North Carolina 4-3 on Tar Heel turf Saturday afternoon. Both teams are now 9-2 for the season. UNC is 2-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play and the Demon Deacons are 1-2. The first half was an intense, even matchup, with each squad posting two goals. Wake Forest held a 2-1 advantage in penalty corners and North Carolina posted a 9-4 shot advantage. Tar Heel Charlotte Verstraten scored her first goal of the season to open up scoring in the match. Wake Forest's Raisa Schiller tied the score just over 25 minutes into play, firing an unassisted rocket from the top of the scoring circle. Liz Fries gave the Deacons a 2-1 edge one minute later, teaming up with Michelle Kasold and Melissa Martin to score on a penalty corner. With less than five minutes left before the halftime break, UNC's Liz Slocum knocked in a cross from Elizabeth Stephens to knot the score. In the second half, UNC out-shot the Deacs 6-1 and held a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners. Taryn Gjurich put the Tar Heels ahead 3-2 with her first goal of the season and Danielle Forword added a security goal with 20 minutes to play to set the score at 4-2. Wake Forest's leading scorer Hilary Moore kept the Deacs in the game with a goal in the 63rd minute, but the team couldn't come up with the needed fourth goal to take the Tar Heels to overtime.
