No. 11 Wake Forest Upends Second-Ranked North Carolina, 2-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--The 11th-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team upset the second-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 2-0 Saturday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

In a defensive struggle, junior Jenny Everett gave Wake Forest a 1-0 lead at the 8:22 mark in the first half. The Deacons carried that lead into halftime.

In the second half, Wake Forest goal keeper Meaghan Nitka and the Demon Deacon defense stopped several North Carolina scoring opportunities to save the shut out. Nitka had six of her nine saves in the second half. The Tar Heels had eight penalty corners, six coming in the second half, and one penalty stroke.

The Deacons' second goal came with just eight seconds remaining in the game on a break-away shot by freshman Maria Whitehead.

With the win, Wake Forest improves to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in ACC play. North Carolina falls to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the ACC.

The Deacons return to action Sunday, Oct. 3, when they travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on the William & Mary Tribe. Gametime is set for 1 p.m.
