Sept. 22, 2007 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team edged fifth-ranked Wake Forest, 3-2, in front of an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) attendance record of 1,734 in a hard-fought ACC match-up Saturday afternoon. Maryland (9-0, 2-0 ACC) took a 1-0 lead just one and a half minutes into the game after Katie O'Donnell found an opening in front of the net. Wake Forest (5-3, 1-1 ACC) responded with four shots, two of which were saved by Terrapin goalkeeper Kathryn Masson. Exactly four minutes after the game's first goal, the Demon Deacons tied the game as sophomore Aileen Davis scored off a penalty corner deflection, snapping Maryland's three-game shutout streak. Michelle Kasold was credited with the assist. In the 15th minute, Wake goalkeeper Crystal Duffield saved a shot off a Maryland penalty corner, but could not save the rebound as Janneke van Leeuwen gave the Terps a 2-1 lead. Maryland kept the one-goal lead until Kasold's shot inside the circle was blocked, but the junior midfielder was there to knock in the ball, tying the game at 2-all. The Deacs continued to pressure the home defense as Emily Cummings and Kim Romansky fired off shots, but the offense quickly changed hands when Maryland took four straight shots on frame after coming out of its timeout. At the 58:49 mark, O'Donnell beat Duffield in a one-on-one match-up and knocked in the game-winning goal. Duffield recorded two more saves en route to her career high 10 saves. Kasold led the Deacs with six shots, including four shots on goal, while Melissa Martin and Chelsea Cipriani added two shots each.
Maryland out-shot Wake Forest 18-13, including a 12-6 advantage in the second half. Masson recorded six saves for the Terps. Wake Forest returns to Winston-Salem next weekend to host top-ranked North Carolina on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Michigan State on Sunday. |
