WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The second-ranked Wake Forest field hockey squad defended its undefeated record over the weekend with a 2-1 victory over Indiana on Sunday at Kentner Stadium. The win comes after a victory earlier this weekend over Duke, setting the Demon Deacon record at 6-0 during regular season play and 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Hoosiers are 3-2 after suffering a double-overtime loss on Saturday to Ohio in Winston-Salem. Indiana opened scoring in the game when it converted on its first penalty corner attempt. Brittney Hacken landed the solid strike 25 minutes into the contest, supported by pusher Alina Valentina and setter Mutsa Mutembwa. Wake Forest trailed the Hoosiers at the halftime break, but the Deacons were able to knot the score in a penalty corner play 10 minutes into second half. Minou Gimbrere shot a rocket through the Indiana defenders and Aileen Davis was able to guide the ball into the Hoosier cage. Michelle Kasold had her seventh assist of the season on play, setting the ball for Gimbrere following the feed from Melissa Martin. Indiana stepped up its attack in the second half, but an overly aggressive move by an IU defender resulted in a penalty stroke opportunity for the Deacons. Head Coach Jennifer Averill sent in junior Regina Shannon to go one-on-one against former Wake Forest goalkeeper Alex Mann in the Indiana goal. Shannon sent the ball into the left-hand corner of the cage to give the Deacons the winning edge with just under 20 minutes in regulation. Wake Forest goalkeeper Crystal Duffield had five saves into the contest, including a solid block on a high flicked ball just two yards in front of the WF goal.
Next up for the Demon Deacons will be the team's first road contest of the season. The game will be against Ohio on neutral territory at the University of Virginia on September 20. On Sunday, September 21, Wake Forest will take a short drive on I-40 to Davidson, N.C. to take on the Davidson Wildcats. |
