Winston-Salem, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team blanked Virginia Commonwealth 7-0 in Richmond Sunday afternoon. The Deacs have shut out four of their five opponents this season.
Senior forward/midfielder Jenny Everett continues to lead the Deacon offensive charge, scoring twice and assisting on three goals. Wake's Carrie Neidhardt scored the team's first goal - the only goal needed by the Deacons - with less than four minutes elapsed in the first half. Junior Jemima Cameron added another goal at the eight-minute mark. Everett and sophomore Maria Whitehead provided the assists on both goals.
Everett scored the first of her two goals on the day a minute later, taking a cross from junior Jennie Shelton and pushing the ball past VCU goalkeeper Anne Forrester. Freshman Kelly Doton completed the Deacon offensive run in the first half, scoring off Everett's cross with just over four minutes remaining in the half.
Everett, who already has 25 points this season, opened up Wake's scoring in the second half on a penalty stroke. Freshman Katie Ackerman and sophomore Marlena Reese scored the Deacons' final two goals. Ackerman's goal was the first of her career. Reese, now with five career goals, took a cross from Whitehead with only 39 seconds remaining in the game to provide Wake's final victory margin.
The Deacons allowed the Rams only four shots the entire game, but had 25 shots of their own. Senior goalkeeper Jaime Tressler recorded two saves and the Deacon defense accounted for one more save, while Forrester made nine for VCU. Wake Forest took 14 penalty corners and one penalty stroke.
The Deacons improve their record to 5-0 on the season and will entertain Radford at Kentner Stadium September 13 at 7:00 pm.
