DURHAM, N.C. - The fifth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team received goals from four different players as it topped No. 8 Duke, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Williams Field. With the win, the Demon Deacons improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Blue Devils dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in ACC play.

The Deacs converted the first penalty corner of the contest into a goal to take a quick 1-0 lead at the two-minute mark. Liz Fries scored her first goal of the season and second of her career. Melissa Martin and Michelle Kasold were credited with assists.

Two minutes later, Martin found the back of the net for her first goal of the season after receiving a pass from Raisa Schiller to give the Deacs a two-goal lead.

Duke's defense responded and held Wake to just two shots over the next 20 minutes of play and cut the lead to one goal when Laura Suchoski found Amie Survilla, who scored at the 24:54 mark.

With just under five minutes remaining in the first period, Wake took a two-goal lead, 3-1, for the second time when Chelsea Cipriani scored off of a Martin assist at the 29:57 mark.

The Blue Devils owned most of the possession to open the second half, but were unable to convert on any of their 10 shots.

The Deacs were not done scoring over the home team as freshman Emily Cummings scored her second consecutive goal in a game off a pass from Aileen Davis at the 58:52 mark to give the visiting team a 4-1 advantage.

Duke was able to put one more goal on the board in the 68th minute of the game to cut the lead to 4-2, but Wake Forest easily held on for the win.

The Deacs were out-shot 18-12, but Wake Forest proved to take advantage of its scoring opportunities in the game. Wake goalkeeper Crystal Duffield and Duke's Caitlin Williams both recorded four saves in the game.

Wake Forest will open at home on Wednesday, Sept. 12 against Radford in a 7 p.m. game at Kentner Stadium.
