Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team posted a 2-1 win over No. 1 North Carolina, pulling the victory with a 3-1 edge in strokes following two extra periods.

Wake Forest's Kim Romansky was the first scorer of the game to break through, taking a pass from Michelle Kasold just nine minutes into the contest. North Carolina's Melanie Brill countered six minutes later when she teamed up with Katelyn Falgowski to convert on a penalty corner.

The Tar Heels had an advantage in possession through the first half, taking five penalty corners while Wake Forest had none.

The Demon Deacons took over during the second half, out-shooting the Tar Heels 7-5 and holding a 4-1 penalty corner advantage. Despite the extra opportunities, neither of the teams could add a goal before the end of regulation.

Two 15 minute sudden-victory overtimes followed, but with both teams visibly fatigued and missing open shots, the game was going to be determined by a shootout.

Regina Shannon and Michelle Kasold notched the first two Wake Forest attempts, while UNC went 1-1. Wake Forest goalkeeper Crystal Duffield successfully defended the Demon Deacon goal against Melanie Brill and Britt van Beek, allowing Wake Forest's Minou Gimbrere to net the game-winning stroke on Wake's fourth attempt.

Wake Forest is now 3-0 for the year while the top-ranked Tar Heels fell to 1-2. Next up for the Demon Deacons will be James Madison on Sunday at 1 p.m.
