WFU Kicks Off Five-Game Homestand with Record-Tying Win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team rebounded from a 6-0 opening day defeat at No. 2 Old dominion to post three straight shutouts and improve their overall record to 3-1. The Deacons finish out a five-game homestand this week with games vs. Appalachian State, American, Virginia Commonwealth, and Duke.

LAST WEEK'S WRAP-UP The Demon Deacons picked up a pair of wins over the weekend in Harrisonburg, Va., playing two neutral-site contests at James Madison's Bridgeforth Stadium. On Fri Sept. 6, senior back Amy Allen (Washington, CT/Shepaug Valley) scored midway through the first half to lift Wake Forest to a 1-0 win over Northwestern. Allen's goal came on a direct corner 17:35 into the opening period, assisted by junior back Lisa Andries (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich) and junior forward Amanda Janney (Fort Worth, TX/Trinity Valley). Sophomore Meaghan Nitka (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) made five saves to earn her first shutout of the year.

On Saturday, Sept. 6, the Deacons scored three goals in a seven-and-a-half minute span in the second half to earn a 3-0 shutout of Kent at JMU. Sophomore midfielder Kelly Malinoski's (Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) goal broke a scoreless tie with 23:18 left to play, and Allen scored off a direct corner just three minutes later for a 2-0 Wake lead. Senior midfielder Nicole Serluco's (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) goal on a penalty stroke with 15:51 remaining capped the scoring. Wake held Kent to just three shots on goal.

The Deacons opened up their five-game homestand with a school record-tying 12-0 win over visiting Davidson on Tuesday, Sept. 9. The Deacs' 12 goals scored and 12-goal margin of victory matched the records set by the 1975 Wake team, who topped UNC Greensboro 12-0. WFU outshot the Wildcats by a 32-3 margin and held a 22-2 advantage in penalty corners. Freshman midfielder Jenny Everett (Center Rutland, VT/Rutland) opened the scoring by deflecting a corner shot by Allen, who converted another corner just two minutes later for an early 2-0 ead. Wake ran off seven more goals before halftime, including three straight by sophomore forward Samantha Rush (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin). Sophomore midfielder Margit Haalebos (Hattem, Netherlands) led the Deacs with three goals and two assists on the day, while Rush had an assist to go with her hat-trick. Everett netted her first two career goals, while Janney had a goal and two assists. Nitka and freshman Jaime Tressler (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) combined for three saves in goal to share the shutout.

OTHER NEWS & NOTES With her two assists vs. Davidson, senior midfielder Nicole Serluco moved into a tie for fifth place on the Deacons' all-time assists list with 14.
