WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's basketball team will begin Atlantic Coast Conference action on Thursday night, when it plays host to fifth-ranked Maryland at 7 p.m. The Terrapins lead the ACC with a six-game win streak and a non-conference record of 16-1. Junior Kristi Toliver leads the Terp offensive campaign with an average of 16.8 points per game and 7.8 assists per game. Toliver also boasts a team high 28 steals. Junior Marissa Coleman averages 8.1 rebounds per game, while Laura Harper has 20 blocks for the season. Maryland opened the year with a 10 game win-streak, including victories over ranked opponents Oklahoma, LSU, Notre Dame and Ohio State before then fourth-ranked Rutgers broke the run with a 60-68 win in New Jersey. Recently the squad has notched wins over Middle Tennessee, James Madison, and UM Baltimore County. Wake Forest is 12-2 for the year, marking the program's best regular season non-conference performance sin 1987. Junior gaurd Alex Tchangoue boasts a team high average of 12.1 point per game and 7.8 rebounds per game. Forwards Corinne Groves and Christen Brown fall just behind Tchangoue in scoring, with 11.9 and 8.1 points per game. The Deacons are riding a three-game win streak, with a recent win over Longwood on December. WFU's 57-26 win over the Lancers marked the lowest opponent score yielded in 2007. Wake Forest leads the league scoring defense, limiting opponents to an average of just over 47 points per game. The Terrapins are currently second in the ACC is scoring offense, with a 79.9 per game average. The Longwood game was a Wake Forest WBB record in the Joel Coliseum for opponent points yielded, the closest mark coming in 2005 when Morgan State only picked up 33 points. The Lancers' 26 points was the third lowest opponent mark in Wake Forest program history, the other two lowest totals occurring in 1971 and 1972. Following Thursday's game, the Demon Deacons will host Virginia on Sunday at 2 p.m. to wrap up a six-game homestand. Next week, Wake Forest will head south to take on FSU on January 17, and then travel north to play in Boston College on January 20.
