Wake Forest Falls Short Against Campbell, 67-62
BUIES CREEK, N.C.-- Felecia Autry scored 22 points and grabbed
10 rebounds to lift Campbell over visiting Wake Forest, 67-62, in a women's
basketball game Saturday afternoon.
The win came despite a career performance from Wake Forest junior
point guard Heidi Coleman, who scored a personal-best 27 points and tied
her own school record with six three-pointers. The Demon Deacons were
outmuscled under the boards all day, however, getting out rebounded 42-28
and having three of their top post players in foul trouble late in the
game. Wake (3-7) got off to a strong start as Coleman hit four
three-pointers in the first 4:09 to help Wake to an early 14-2 advantage.
The Camels (6-2) regrouped to close the gap to 32-30 at the half and
opened the second period with an 11-0 run to surge ahead. The Deacs rallied
late in the game,and Coleman sunk three consecutive free throws after being
fouled on a three-point shot to give Wake a 62-61 lead with 1:11 to go. The
lead lasted only 15 seconds, however, as the Camels scored six straight
points to seal the win.
Ashley Moore added 17 points for Campbell, while Ralanda Campbell
had a game-high 11 rebounds. Coleman was the only Deacon in double figures,
shooting 8-of-16 from the floor and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw
line. Junior forward Emon McMillian led Wake on the boards with six
rebounds, despite playing just 19 minutes due to foul trouble. Junior guard
Cynthia Kelley made a career-high four steals, while junior center Liz
Nelson blocked a career-best four shots, all in the first half. Wake
hosts Providence on Monday, December 22, at 5:00 pm in Joel Coliseum.
