Wake Forest Upsets James Madison in Double OT, 76-71
HARRISONBURG, Va.--Junior guard Heidi Coleman scored 17 points, including two clutch free throws in double overtime, to lift visiting Wake Forest over James Madison, 76-71. The decision snapped a four-game losing streak for the Demon Deacons (3-6) as well as a four-game winning streak for the Dukes (5-3).
Trailing just 32-29 at halftime, Wake didn't get a single shot off in the first five minutes of the second period and fell behind by 13 points. The Deacs regrouped and went on a 21-4 run in a six-minute span, taking the lead on a layup by Emon McMillian at the 7:04 mark. The game was neck-and-neck from that point on, and a Cynthia Kelley free throws gave Wake a 60-59 lead with 20 seconds remaining in regulation. JMU's Kia Cole was fouled with half a second on the clock, however, and the freshman sunk one of her two shots from the line to force overtime. The Deacs pulled ahead by three in the first overtime on an Olivia Dardy jumper at 0:54, but Madison's Manika Herring hit a Hail Mary three-pointer with four-tenths of a tick on the clock. Coleman hit a trey in the second OT to put Wake ahead by three, then sunk both her free throws with four seconds left to ice the win.
Wake shot a season high 57 percent from the floor, including 64 percent from three-point range (9-14). JMU dominated the boards all night, outrebounding WFU 38-25, but the Dukes committed 27 turnovers in the loss. For Wake, Coleman hit a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range and tied for the team lead in rebounds with five. McMillian added 14 points and five rebounds, while Kelley had 12 points and a team-best five assists. Herring led the Dukes with a career-high 17 points and 10 boards. Kish Jordan had 16 points, while Becky Wollenberg added 14 points, all in the first half. Akosua DeMann led JMU on the boards with 12 rebounds.
Wake Forest travels to Campbell University on Saturday for a 12:00 noon game.
