No. 7 North Carolina Rolls Past Wake Forest, 90-59

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Tracy Reid scored 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as No. 7 North Carolina rolled past Wake Forest, 90-59, in both teams' Atlantic Coast Conference season opener at Joel Coliseum on Thursday night.

Wake Forest (2-5, 0-1 ACC) hung with the Tar Heels (5-1, 1-0) early in the game, controlling the boards and keeping pace with UNC's up-tempo play. Carolina used a 15-0 run midway through the first period to take control of the game, however, and went into halftime with a 35-22 advantage. The Deacons came out a bit flat defensively in the second half, and UNC kicked its offense into high gear. The Tar Heels ran up 55 second half points, 20 of which came from Reid, and led the Deacs by as many 38 points.

"The first half, we were real sporadic," said UNC Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell. "We were not penetrating or working the fast break, and we were not taking the ball inside. They dominated the boards in the first half. In the second half, we were better offensively and we moved the ball inside better."

"I think we played hard," said Wake Forest Head Coach Charlene Curtis. "I am proud of our effort. I thought Carolina played more aggressively in the second half. We came out a little flat defensively. We turned the ball over more in the second half and gave them easy baskets." UNC outrebounded Wake by a slight 43-42 margin, but forced 24 Deacon turnovers. Chanel Wright added 19 points for UNC, 15 of which came in the first half. For Wake Forest, Emon McMillian recorded a career-high 20 points and pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds. Freshman Olivia Dardy had the best outing of her young career, notching 11 points and seven boards.

Wake travels to Tennessee Tech this Saturday, December 6 for a 6:45 start Eastern time.
