West Virginia Tops Wake Forest, 61-51

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--Junior guard Christie Lambert scored 16 points, all in the first half, to lift visiting West Virginia to a 61-51 victory over Wake Forest in a women's basketball conterst at Joel Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers (2-2) used an 18-2 run midway through the first half, including 10 points by Lambert, to gain a comfortable lead over the Demon Deacons (2-3). WVU held a 35-20 advantage at the half after holding Wake to just 25 percent shooting in the first period (7 of 28). The Deacs rallied in the second half, however, closing within four points on an Emon McMillian layup with 3:50 remaining, but could get no closer. West Virginia shot 41 percent from the floor to the Deacs' 35 percent and forced 22 Wake turnovers.

WVU junior guard Rebecca Burbridge and senior guard Talisha Hargis added 12 and 11 points for the Mountaineers, respectively, while senior forward Adrienne Beard came off the bench to grab a game-high seven rebounds. For Wake Forest, junior guard Heidi Coleman scored 13 points while redshirt freshman forward Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick pulled down six rebounds.

Wake travels to East Carolina on Tuesday, December 2, for a 7 p.m. contest.
