Mosley's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Wake Forest Past Appalachian State, 70-68
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--Sophomore guard Alisha Mosley hit a 12-foot jump shot from the left corner at the buzzer to lift Wake Forest over visiting Appalachian State, 70-68, in a women's basketball game at Reynolds Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Wake (2-2) jumped on the Mountaineers (1-3) early, leading by as many as 14 points in the first half and holding a 43-35 advantage at the break. Junior point guard Heidi Coleman paced the Demon Deacons in the first half, scoring 17 points on six of nine shooting, including five of six three-pointers. Appalachian State went on a 15-3 run midway through the second period, however, taking the lead on a Laura Edwards three-pointer with 7:57 to go. The Mountaineers built their lead to as many as seven points late in the game, capitalizing on Deacon turnovers and controlling the boards. Trailing by five with just 48 seconds remaining, Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick converted a three-point play for Wake Forest to close the gap to two. Coleman drew a foul and sunk both free throws at 0:28, tying the score at 68-68. Freshman Kristen Shaffer then stole an Edwards pass on the defensive end with 16 seconds to go, setting up Mosley's late-game heroics.
Coelman finished with a game-high 19 points, while Kirkpatrick and Mosley added 14 and 11, respectively. Junior forward Emon McMillian led WFU on the boards with 13 rebounds. Four Mountaineers netted double figure scoring, led by junior forward Beth Schoolfield's 16 points. Tiffany Chappell and Natasha Lettsome had eight rebounds apiece.
