Dec. 2, 2004 Final Stats | Quotes | Photo Gallery Winston-Salem, N.C. - Redshirt-sophomore Porsche' Jones put up her second 20-point game in as many outings and junior Keila Evans notched her first career double-double, as the Wake Forest women's basketball team clobbered the North Carolina A&T Aggies, 92-43, Thursday night in Joel Coliseum. The Demon Deacons, 5-0, are off to the best start since the 1987-88 season when Wake Forest opened the year with 10 straight victories. That season was also the last, and only time that the program has earned a berth to the NCAA tournament. Against the Aggies, five players scored in double figures, while four earned or tied season highs. Scoring 42 points in the paint and 46 in transition , Wake Forest out shot the Aggies 66-51, converting on 51.5 percent of their attempts from the floor. The Demon Deacons opened the game up fast, forcing seven turnovers in the first five minutes, en route to a 13-4 run that included Jones dumping in seven points. Jennifer Johnson increased the Deacon lead as she dropped in three straight, pushing Wake ahead, 24-11. A pair of 3-pointers by Cotelia Bond-Young with just less than eight minutes left in the half shot the Deacs lead to 13. Attempting to chip away at Wake's lead, the Aggies got a 3-pointer by Renee Porter and another by Yanumbe Sherman, but the Deacons answered with two points from Johnson and a perfect three from the top of the key to put Wake into the locker room with a 13 point lead. North Carolina A&T opened the second half with the first two points, but Wake quickly ran the score up with a seven point unanswered streak that included four points from Evans. A field goal by junior Liz Strunk continued the Deacs run that left the Aggies trailing, 65-39. The Aggies would score only four more points in the remaining minutes of the half.
The Demon Deacs will close their five game home stand on Saturday night against the Providence Friars. Game time in Joel Coliseum is set for 5:30 pm. |
