Wake Forest Women's Basketball Travels to James Madison
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- After an 11-day layoff for final exams, the Wake Forest women's basketball team gets back into action this week with a pair of road games. The Demon Deacons will look to snap their four-game losing streak with a win at James Madison on Wednesday, Dec. 17. Game time is 7:30 pm in Harrisonburg, Va.
Deacs Struggle in Loss to Tennessee Tech
Wake Forest continued to struggle, shooting just 29 percent from the floor in a 65-44 loss at Tennessee Tech. Playing their third game in five days, the Deacs came out flat and were never able to find a rhythm. Tennessee Tech, playing without its leading scorer and rebounder, opened up a 10-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game and never looked back. Three Golden Eaglettes notched double figures, while only one Deacon tallied more than 10 points - Emon McMillian (12). Wake outrebounded the Golden Eaglettes, 45-37, but committed 23 turnovers in the team's fourth straight loss. McMillian led the Deacs on the boards with nine rebounds. Wake's starting backcourt of Heidi Coleman and Alisha Mosley, averaging 21.1 points and 4.3 assists per game going into the contest, was held scoreless and assistless for the night.
McMillian leads the Deacs in scoring (10.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg) and is the only player with a double-figure scoring average. Coleman is averaging 9.8 ppg and continues to be the team's top three-point threat, sinking two treys per game and shooting at a 33 percent clip. Wake is hitting just 37 percent from the floor and is committing 20.5 turnovers per contest, but is holding opponents to 41 percent shooting and forcing 17.6 turnovers per game.
Scouting James Madison (5-2)
The Dukes returned three starters from last year's 19-9 team and are under the direction of new head coach Bud Childers. Childers came to JMU from Louisville, where he led the Cardinals to three NCAA appearances in eight years, and he will look to return the Dukes to the level of national prominence enjoyed in the late 80's. JMU has posted 14 consecutive winning seasons, but has only been to the NCAA's once in the last six years after earning six tournament berths - and four trips to the Sweet 16 - from 1986-91.
The Dukes enter this game on a four-game winning streak, having defeated those opponents by an average margin of 24.2 points. JMU's only two losses this season have come at the hands of formidable foes - falling to No. 10 Vanderbilt (59-42) and 1997 NCAA participant Maine (85-62). The Dukes feature a balanced scoring attack, led by freshman guard Becky Wollenberg (12.0 ppg, .400 3FG%). Wollenberg teams with sophomore assist leader Mistiza Colebank (6.9 ppg, 4.6 apg) in the backcourt. Juniors Kish Jordan (8.0 ppg, 7.1 rpg) and Hope Cook (7.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg) form an intimidating frontcourt tandem, and junior Manika Herring (7.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg), has been solid at center since winning the starting job. Cook only returned to the starting lineup last week after recovering from spring knee surgery; she started 23 games for JMU last year until the injury ended her season prematurely. Junior forward Shirlence Archer (8.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg) has also been strong off the bench.
Series History
WFU leads the all-time series with James Madison, 3-2. The teams split four meetings in the 1980's before the series resumed last season in Winston-Salem. The Deacs took that decision, 63-51, to hand the Dukes their first loss of the 1996-97 season. RaeAnna Mulholland came off the bench to lead Wake with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Head Coach Charlene Curtis
Charlene Curtis is in her first season at Wake Forest, bringing a wealth of coaching experience, a commitment to excellence, and a drive to bring the program to new heights. Curtis came to WFU from Connecticut, where she served as an assistant coach for two seasons and helped the Huskies to a 67-5 record, two Big East championships, and an NCAA Final Four appearance. Prior to UConn, Curtis' was the head coach at Temple (1991-95), where she compiled a 41-97 record and coached four Atlantic 10 All-Rookie players, and Radford (1985-90), where she was named Big South Coach of the Year twice and compiled a 121-53 record. Curtis was also an assistant at Georgetown (1984) and Virginia (1982-83) and has also been an assistant coach with USA Basketball and a floor coach for the Olympic Trials. A 1976 graduate of Radford, Curtis was the school's first 1,000-point scorer, a team captain, and named team MVP in 1975 and 1976. In 1995, she was inducted as a charter member of the Radford Sports Hall of Fame. She received a master's degree in secondary education administration from Virginia in 1982. Curtis is currently 2-6 at Wake Forest (.250) and 164-156 overall (.513) as a head coach.
1996-97 Recap
Expectations were high for the Demon Deacons last fall, but the season didn't live up to those high hopes. The Deacs posted a seven-game winning streak early in the year, but that early success was followed by a 12-game losing streak which sent the Deacs into a tailspin in the conference standings.
Senior center Tracy Connor led the team in scoring (12.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg), while senior forward Lindsay Seawright was the top Deac defensively, averaging 1.1 blocks plus 6.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Sophomore point guard Heidi Coleman started every game and finished second on the team in scoring (10.2 ppg) and first in assists (2.8 apg). She was also the team's top three-point threat, connecting on a school-record 61 of 179 (.341). In addition to the above three, the Deacon starting five featured sophomore guard Cynthia Kelley (8.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg) and freshman Alisha Mosley (7.0 ppg, 2.2 rpg), a member of the ACC's All-Rookie team.
Preseason Prognostications
The Demon Deacons were picked to finish eighth in the conference in the 1997-98 ACC Preseason Media Poll, right where they finished last year. North Carolina was the unanimous first-place choice with 153 votes, followed by Virginia (119), Duke (112), NC State (107), Clemson (83), Maryland (81), Georgia Tech (57), Wake (27), and Florida State (26).
Oh Captain, My Captain
Three players were selected to captain the 1997-98 Demon Deacon squad: senior forward Carri Walker, redshirt junior point guard Heidi Coleman, and redshirt junior forward Emon McMillian.
Coleman Climbs the Career Charts
Redshirt junior point guard Heidi Coleman already ranks among the top five three-point shooters in Wake Forest history with still two years of eligibility remaining. She currently ranks third all-time in three-pointers attempted (288) and is fourth in treys made (102). Both career marks are held by Nicole Levesque '94, now a member of the WNBA's Charlotte Sting. Coleman already holds the school single-season records in both categories, connecting on 61-of-179 treys last year to set the marks. This season, Coleman is averaging 9.8 points per outing and has connected on 16 of her 48 three-point attempts (.333), including a phenomenal 5-of-9 performance in the first half of the App State game. For her career, she has a 35.4 three-point shooting average.

McMillian Leads the Way Inside
With both starting post players lost to graduation, the Deacons knew they would have to rely on some new players to step up in the paint this season. Junior forward and team co-captain Emon McMillian has been the Deacs' most consistent player inside thus far, starting all eight games at power forward and averaging team highs of 10.0 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks per contest. She has scored in double figures in five games and has recorded two double-doubles (vs. VCU and UNC). McMillian contributed a career-high 20 points vs. the No. 7 Tar Heels while pulling down 11 boards. She has led the team in rebounding in six of eight games, and her 13 boards vs. Appalachian State was a new career high. After missing the entire 1995-96 season with shoulder surgery, McMillian averaged 3.3 points and 3.9 rebounds in just over 17 minutes of action per game as a reserve last year.
Mosley Trying to Shake Shooting Woes
Sophomore guard Alisha Mosley has suffered from her share of shooting woes in the early 1997-98 season. After hitting 45.2 percent of her shots and averaging 17.0 points per game in the Deacs' first three outings (two exhibitions and the season opener), Mosley has since strugged to find her touch. She has attempted a team-high 93 field goals this season (11.6 per game), including 36 three-pointers, but has found net only 28 percent of the time. While trying to shake the slump, Mosley is finding other ways to contribute, leading the team in assists (2.4 apg) and steals (1.3 spg). She has hit double figure points four times, including a career-high 17 points at East Carolina. She also hit a 12-foot jumper at the buzzer to lift Wake to the thrilling win over Appalachian State earlier in the year. One of the team's most promising young players, Mosley is coming off an outstanding freshman season which saw her break into the starting five and earn ACC All-Rookie honors. She averaged 20.6 minutes per game in 1996-97, contributing 7.0 points per game.
Kelley Adds a Physical Edge
Junior swing guard Cynthia Kelley brings a physical edge to the Deacon backcourt with her slashing style and tenacious defense. Kelley, who started 22 games last year and averaged 8.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, has picked up this season exactly where she left off. In eight games thus far, Kelley has contributed 7.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per contest and continues to be one of the team's top defensive players. She has hit double figures twice, scoring 10 points vs. Texas-Arlington and adding 14 vs. East Carolina.
Walker the Deacs' Lone Senior
Senior forward Carri Walker is the Deacs' only true senior on the roster this season and serves as one of the team's three captains. Walker has been a key reserve for the Deacs at forward for three years, and has consistently been one of the first post players off the bench this season. In eight games this season, Walker is averaging 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest and shooting 55 percent from the floor (11 of 20).
Nelson Anchors the Low Post
After appearing in only 10 games over the past two years, redshirt junior center Liz Nelson has been called upon to assume a larger role in the Deacon lineup this season. Nelson has earned the starting call at center for the Deacs' first eight games, providing much-needed size (6-4) in the middle. She has logged just 9.9 minutes per game, averaging 1.9 points and 1.9 rebounds in that time. She had her best performance of her career in the loss to Tennessee State, tallying six points and six rebounds in just 17 minutes of action. She also netted a career-best three blocks in the win over App State, despite playing just nine minutes.
Kirkpatrick Making the Most of Her Time
In her first season of collegiate action, redshirt freshman forward Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick has impressed the Demon Deacon coaches by making the most of her time on the floor. Averaging 15.6 minutes per game thus far, Kirkpatrick has consistently provided a spark off the bench for the Deacs this season. She has contributed 4.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in Wake's first eight contests, including career-highs of 14 points and eight rebounds in just 22 minutes vs. Appalachian State. Kirkpatrick played a key role in the Deacs' victory over ASU, nailing a critical three-point play with just 48 seconds remaining to spark a 7-0 run and setting the screen for Alisha Mosley's game-winning basket at the buzzer. A two-time honorable mention high school All-American, Kirkpatrick redshirted the 1996-97 year due to a knee injury.
Shaffer the Deacs' "Sixth Man"
Freshman swing guard Kristen Shaffer has been particulary impressive in the early season and has cemented a role as Wake's "sixth man". She earned one start this year vs. West Virginia and logged a career-high 31 minutes, tallying eight points, three rebounds, and three steals. For the season, Shaffer is contributing an average of 6.3 points and 2.8 rebounds. She has scored in double figures in two games (10 vs. VCU, 12 vs. Tennessee State) and came up with a critical steal in the waning seconds of the App State game to set up Alisha Mosley's buzzer-beating shot.
Dardy Posts Back-to-Back Double Figure Outings
Another rookie who is blossoming into a solid reserve is forward Olivia Dardy, who posted back-to-back double-figure scoring outings for the Deacs two weeks ago. Dardy, who currently averages 12.9 minutes, 5.0 points, and 3.4 boards per game, hit double figures for the first time in her career with 10 points vs. East Carolina on Dec. 2, then tallied 11 points vs. UNC two days later. She also pulled down a career-best seven boards vs. the Tar Heels while dishing two assists and making two steals. Although Dardy came to Wake as a perimeter player, the Deacs have used her primarily in the post, where they need the most help. As a result, Dardy's inside game is developing nicely, making her a more skilled all-around player.
Whiteside Grooming as a Backcourt Reserve
Rookie guard Janae Whiteside has seen limited action on the court thus far, but is patiently awaiting her turn to contribute to the Deacons' backcourt game. Whiteside is currently logging 9.9 minutes per game and tallying 1.4 points and 0.5 rebounds per appearance, but hopes to play a larger role as the season goes on. Primarily a shooting guard in high school, Whiteside helped her Charlotte Latin team to two North Carolina state titles. She serves as a reserve at both point and shooting guard for the Deacs.
Anderson Still Recovering From Knee Surgery
Freshman Megan Anderson, a promising forward with strong shooting skills, has yet to hit the hardwood as a collegiate player. Anderson suffered two ACL tears in the past year, and is still recovering from offseason knee surgery. She hopes to be ready to play by January.
Helms Inspires From the Bench
Senior center Nancy Helms has hung up her playing shoes but remains one of the Demon Deacons' most inspirational team members. After struggling with recurrent knee and foot injuries throughout her career, the 6-3 Helms received a permanent medical hardship waiver last year and will finish her career from the sidelines, providing moral support to the Deacs.

Deacs Stomp VCU in Season Opener
Nov. 15, 1997 * Joel Coliseum * Winston-Salem, NC
Four Deacons scored in double figures as Wake Forest topped visiting Virginia Commonwealth, 71-57, in both teams' regular-season opener. Wake closed the first half with an 8-0 run to take a 33-24 advantage at intermission. The Rams began to cut into WFU's lead in the second half, closing within two at 39-37 wqith 13:57 to go.
