Greenville, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams competed at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday, in Greenville, N.C. The women finished fourth overall in the 6k race while the men placed ninth on the 10k course. Deacons Selina Sekulic, Michelle Sikes, Hanna Bremler and Shane Ahlers earned All-Region honors after their performances.

The men finished ninth, with four runners placing in the top-50 in the field of 200 participants. Ahlers was named All-Region after a 16th place finish. He was the only Deacon to finish in the top-20 for the men.

"I'm so proud of Shane," said head coach Annie Bennett. "He really led the team and we are looking forward to having him back next year.

"Sean Stevens recovered well from his unfortunate mishap during the conference tournament earlier this month. We were so proud of him for finishing strong." Stevens placed 28th overall. Brad Wharton and John Compton finished 47th and 49th respectively to round out the top-50 for the Deacs. Joel Conn, Kevin Jones and Brian Smith also competed for Wake Forest, earning 103rd, 132nd, and 165th place finishes in that order.

The women finished fourth, behind the strength of a young Deacon lineup. Sophomores Selina Sekulic and Michelle Sikes earned top-20 finishes for Wake, while junior Hanna Bremler placed 24th, to complete a tri of All-Region Honors for the lady Deacs. Sekulic finished seventh and Sikes finished 16th.

"We really showed improvement," said Bennett. "I thought the women ran an outstanding race and I am excited about where we are and about the possibility of advancing to nationals, especially after the injury plagued year that we've had."

Caitlin Chrisman, Jill Miller and Liz Hankinson contributed top-70 performances in the 180 woman field on Saturday. Chrisman placed 39th, Miller 44th and Hankinson 69th.

Freshman Josh McDougal of Liberty claimed the individual title in the men's race, while N.C. State won the team title. The Duke women took home the team crown and junior Carol Henry of North Carolina captured the individual race.
