GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Wake Forest cross country teams raced Saturday morning at the NCAA Southeast Region Cross Country Championships. The Demon Deacon women's squad finished third with 117 points on the 6,000 meter course at Furman University Golf Course and the men's team took fourth with 143 points on the 10,000 meter route. Wake Forest runner Sara Day took third overall, qualifying individually for the NCAA Championships. The Demon Deacon squads are hoping to earn at-large berths to the NCAA Championships, which will be determined at noon on Monday, Nov. 13.
Day, a senior from Winston-Salem, N.C., led the Deacs, finishing third in the women's race with a time of 21:27. She has led Wake Forest in all six races that she has ran this season, finishing no lower than fourth place. Day earned all-region honors for finishing in the top 25 and she qualified individually for the NCAA Championships by finishing in the top four. Kathleen Kuhnert and Risa Rutland also earned all-region honors, crossing the line at 22:19 and 22:30 for 22nd and 25th place respectively. Denise Hefferin and Becca Veenstra pulled took 35th and 36th place, with times of 22:47 and 22:48 and Nicole Kalogeropoulos ran a 23:12, good for 53rd place.
"I am very happy with our performance," said Wake Forest women's coach Annie Schweitzer Bennett. "We really dug in deep and pulled everything out."
NC State won the Women's NCAA Regional Championship with 72 points and North Carolina's Shalane Flanagan captured the individual championship with a time of 20:51.
On the men's side, Garick Hill paced Wake Forest, taking 17th place with a time of 31:11. A junior from Advance, N.C., Hill led the Deacs in the their first and last raced this season. Both Hill and Chris Estwanik earned all-regional honors for finishing in the top 25. Estwanik ran a 31:20 to take 22nd place. Ted DeVos placed 26th with a time of 31:36, Josh Buffolino took 29th with 31:45, Sean Nagorny crossed the line at 32:25 for 49th place and Ed Acosta placed 56th with 32:35.
William & Mary won the Men's NCAA Regional Cross Country Championship with 49 points and Duke's Terry Brennan was the individual champion with a time of 30:37.
