EARLYSVILLE, Va. - Freshman Greg Billington finished 25th to lead Wake Forest to a seventh-place showing at the 2007 ACC Men's Cross Country Championships Saturday morning at Panorama Farms. Billington finished the 8k course in a time of 24:57.7, placing 25th out of 92 runners. It was the second straight meet that Billington has led the Demon Deacons. As a team, Wake Forest took seventh with 193 points. "The men ran well. Our goal was to improve on last year, and we accomplished that," said head coach Annie Bennett. "We had some young kids so some good things for us. Greg Billington really stepped up and did a great job for us. Right now we're just short on numbers due to injury, so we showed good character out there today." Senior John Compton was second for Wake, finishing in 34th with a time of 25:14.4. Redshirt freshman Patrick Russell and sophomore Marcus Dillon finished back-to-back in 42nd and 43rd respectively. Russell ran a 25:33.2, while Dillon turned in a 25:34.9. Sophomore Jeremy Fisico rounded out the Deacons' top five, placing 49th in 25:47.2. Freshman Keaton Morgan took 64th place with a time of 26:08.0.
Seniors Chris Catton and Matt Owen placed 80th and 84th respectively. Catton ran a 27:09.7, and Owen finished in 27:16.8. NC State's Chris Kollar won the individual title, finishing in a time of 24:02.1. Virginia edged out NC State for the team championship. The Cavaliers had three of the top four runners and finished with 32 points. The Wolfpacke were right behind with 39 points. Florida State, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Duke rounded out spots 3-6. This marks the second straight season Wake Forest has been without an All-ACC competitor on the men's side. The Deacons will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Southeast Regionals in Louisville, Ky. Wake will be looking to qualify for its first NCAA Championship appearance since 2001.
