UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The 25th-ranked Wake Forest women's cross country team finished third of 28 squads at the Penn State National Invitational on Friday at the Blue/White Golf Course. Redshirt junior Allie Kieffer placed first for the Deacons and seventh overall with her six-kilometer time of 20:51. The men's team, led by freshman Tom Morrison's 8.4-kilometer time of 27:04, placed 27th.

Kieffer has finished first for the Deacons in each of the four meets in which she's ran this season. Anna Nosenko also had an impressive race, finishing 15th overall and notching a time of 21:05. In addition to Kieffer and A. Nosenko, Marley Burns (21:15), Dina Nosenko (21:28) and Merry Placer (21:51) scored for the Deacons. Laura Rapp and Cate Berenato nearly beat two-thirds of the competitors with times of 22:59 and 23:05, respectively.

"We came out of the meet feeling good about beating [No. 28] Duke and getting third," said head coach Annie Bennett. "We know there are some things that we can improve on and do better, but we feel good about what we did here."

The seventh-ranked West Virginia team finished first at the event with 43 points, followed by host No. 23 Penn State at 83. Wake Forest finished third with 136, beating out No. 28 Duke (154), as well as strong squads from Tennessee (162) and Kentucky (167). Lindsay Carson of Guelph won the individual title with her time of 20:07.

On the men's side, Wake Forest was led by Tom Morrison's performance and 104th overall finish. In a field of 306 runners, the Deacons were only able to race five, as Greg Billington and Paul Loeser could not participate due to illness.

Along with Morrison, Ben Morrow (28:34), Nicholas Lepley (28:52), Zach Hines (28:59) and Matt King (29:26) scored for Wake Forest.

Georgetown totaled 43 points to win the event. Penn State (93) and Villanova (126) finished second and third. Georgetown's Andrew Bumbalough captured the individual title with a time of 25:10.

The Deacons will be back in action for the ACC Championships on Nov. 1, at Chapel Hill, N.C. The women's six-kilometer race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the men's eight-kilometer event at 11 a.m.

On Nov. 15, Wake Forest will host the NCAA Southeast Regionals at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, N.C.
