Bronx, NY - Sophomore Selina Sekulic and junior Sean Stevens paced the Deacon cross country teams at the 10th annual Iona Meet of Champions on Saturday. Sekulic's sixth place finish led the Deacon women to their first No.1 finish this season. Stevens' seventh place finish landed the Deacon men a fourth place spot overall. Five Deacons placed in the top-15 in the women's 6k race, including Sekulic (sixth), Hanna Bremler (10th), Anna Sherman (12th), Caitlin Chrisman (13th) and Michelle Sikes (14th). The race marked the first action for Sekulic and Sherman this season and the first 6k, full championship length course for the Deacon women in 2004. Freshmen Staci Honeyman and Liz Hankinson posted 42nd and 50th place finishes respectively. Molly Nunn completed the Deacon squad with a 78th place finish. The women earned 50 points in their first place campaign. Marquette placed second, with 80 points. Stevens ran the 8k course in 25:18.9, the best mark by a Deacon on the day. Shane Alhers finished 11th. Kevin Jones (34th), Brad Wharton (36th), Brian Smith (40th), Joel Conn (89th), Westin Galloway (103rd) and Ottie Kerley (137th) also competed for Wake Forest. The fourth place finish for the Deacons earned them 101 points. Iona College won the men's race with 35 points.
The Deacons return to action at East Carolina next Saturday. The women's race begins at 10 a.m. followed by the men's race at 11 a.m. |
