July 8, 2002 Winston-Salem, NC - The Wake Forest women・s track & field team earned All-Academic team honors from the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) for NCAA Division I indoor and outdoor track & field. Demon Deacon distance runners Chris Estwanik and Anne Bersagel were named Academic All-Americans by the USTCA. The combined grade point average of the Wake Forest women・s track & field team for the spring 2002 semester was 3.228 and teams needed a 3.0 to qualify for the All-Academic team honor. Individuals that met an automatic or provisional qualifying standard for the most recent NCAA Indoor or Outdoor Championships in addition to having at least a 3.10 GPA qualify for USTCA Academic All-America honors. Estwanik, a middle distance runner from Dublin, OH, graduated May 20 with a degree in Business and a 3.764 GPA. The three-time ACC Champion and eight-time All-ACC selection ran NCAA provisional qualifying times in both the 1,500m and the 3,000m this year as well as the anchor leg of Wake Forest・s automatic qualifying distance medley relay team that finished ninth at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The men・s cross country team・s top finisher at the last two NCAA Cross Country Championships, Estwanik led the Demon Deacon harriers to 19th place finishes at the last two NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Bersagel, a distance runner from Greeley, CO, finished her freshman year with a 3.949 GPA. She provisionally qualified in the outdoor 5,000m this past season and automatically qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships as an individual. Leading Wake・s women・s cross country team in five races this past fall, Bersagel finished eighth at the U.S. Cross Country Championships, just missing the cut for the U.S. Cross Country Junior National Team, but qualifying as the alternate.
