Nov. 2, 2000 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team members Brett Mauro, David Bere, David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon each picked up a pair of wins in the qualifying singles play Thursday at the ITA Region II Championships. Brendon also teamed up with Andrew Simpson for another doubles win as well, but Bere and Mauro lost.
Brett Mauro beat Noah Schnell of Florida State 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 and Colorado State's Rodrigo Villarroel, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of singles qualifying play, where he will meet teammate Trent Brendon Friday morning. Brendon beat Nocholas Monroe from North Carolin 6-1, 6-1 and then battled past Chad Mooney of Florida State 6-2, 7-6.
Loewenthal defeated Michael Duquette from Virginia 6-3, 7-6 and Florida State's Jeff Scarella 6-4, 6-2. Loewenthal will face Demon Deacon teammate David Bere in the quarterfinals of the singles qualifying play Friday morning. Bere defeated Greg Archer 6-3, 6-4 from North Carolina and UNC Greensboro's Tanner Hadden 7-5, 6-1.
In doubles action, Brendon and Andrew Simpson defeated a team from William & Mary 8-3 to advance to the qualifying doubles quarterfinals. Bere and Mauro were edged out by a Duke doubles squad, 8-6.
Raul Munoz and Michael Murray will begin singles play in the main draw, Friday morning. Munoz will take on Gustavo Gomez from East Tennessee State. The results of Murray and Justin Kaufmann played against James Cameron and John Chesworth from Furman and Munoz joined forces with Loewenthal to take on Florian Marquardt and Fernado Sanchez of Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday night in the first round of match doubles play, but at the results were not available when this was written.
The ITA Region II Championships will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 5. Complete
