LAFAYETTE, La. - Justin Kaufmann and Trent Brendon of the Wake Forest men's tennis team fell in the final round of the 2000 BellSouth Mobility Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Cajun Courts in Lafayette, La., Sunday. Kaufmann lost 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to Daniel Homedes from USM in the Flight A Singles Main Draw Championship and Brendon fell 7-5, 6-1 to Rafael Reyes from Rice in the Flight B Singles Main Draw Championship.
Kaufmann, a junior from Mission Hills, Kan., defeated David Corrie from Texas Arlington, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the singles main draw, flight A on Friday. He then battled past Jakub Illowski from Louisiana Lafayette, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round. On Saturday afternoon, Kaufmann topped Aleksey Bubis of Arkansas, 6-3, 6-1 in the third round and then beat Mikka Kangas from USM, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2, to advance to the finals. Brendon, a sophomore from Victorville, Calif., torched Thatcher Cribbs from Lamar, 6-0, 6-0 in the second round of the singles main draw flight B on Friday, after receiving a bye in the first round. On Saturday afternoon, Brendon defeated Uwe Gneiting of USM, 6-1, 6-7, 6-1 and then beat Adam Piskozub from ULM, 6-4, 6-3 to advance to the finals.
In doubles play Brendon and Kaufmann rolled over Viktor Loven and Peter Szczepanski of New Orleans, 8-2 in the first round of doubles draw, flight A on Friday. The Demon Deacon duo fell to Eddie Pancheco and Aleksey Bubis from Arkansas Saturday afternoon, 8-5.
The Demon Deacons will be back in action Oct. 7-15 at the All American
Fall Tournament in Stone Mountain, Ga.
