WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest won the bottom three singles' flights and the doubles' point to knock off No. 17 Florida, 4-3 at the Indoor Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon. The Gators number 17 ranking make them the highest ranked opponent ever defeated by the Demon Deacons.
"This win over a quality team like Florida legitimizes our team this year and our program," said head coach Jeff Zinn. "We had a lot of injuries earlier this season, but I knew how good we could be once we got healthy."
The Deacons improve their record to 4-5 on the year, while Florida dropped its second straight match to an ACC team. Florida lost at Duke on Monday. Prior to that loss, the Gators defeated No. 7 Texas last week and were expected to move into the top 10. Florida now stands at 8-2 overall.
The Deacons led the match 3-2 when Johan Hansen defeated Amr El Sawaf in the No. 4 singles' flight, 6-1, 3-6 and 6-3 to clinch the win.
Wake Forest returns to action on Friday, March 12 in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Deacons will take on Coastal Carolina in the morning, followed by a match against UNC Charlotte that afternoon.
