Mar. 1, 1998
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 19 Virginia Commonwealth Sunday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Center. After consecutive losses to top-20 opponents, the Deacons record falls to 5-4 on the season.
Wake Forest got off to a slow start, losing the doubles point. Wake's standout team of Myles Clouston and Raul Munoz (ranked 32nd in the country) lost at No. 1, 9-8. At No. 3, senior Jimmy Chou and Andres Guzman battled but came up short against Olle Lundberg and Olli Helminen 8-5.
The Deacons were close to pulling off an upset due to a gutty performance in singles action. Billy Gluck and Brett Mauro won two set decisions at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Myles Clouston lost to Daniel Anderson (ranked 19th in the nation) at No. 1. Michael Berger suffered his first defeat of the spring, losing in three sets at No. 4. Johan Hansen also lost in three sets at No. 3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Demon Deacons return to action on March 9 when they visit Florida State. Wake Forest's next home match is scheduled for March 17 versus South Carolina at 2:00 p.m.
