WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The 32nd-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team shut out the East Tennessee State Buccaneers with a 7-0 victory at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. The Demon Deacons won two of three doubles matches and swept the Bucs in singles play to extend Wake Forest's winning streak to six. Wake Forest's 27th ranked David Loewenthal (So., Franklin Lakes, NJ ) and Trent Brendon (Jr., Victorville, CA), captured the No. 1 doubles match over ETSU's Marcos Pavlovich and Diego Inglesias, 8-6. Wake's No. 3 doubles team of Justin Kaufmann (Sr., Mission Hills, KS) and David Bere (Jr., Midland, MI) secured the team point for the Deacs, defeating Moises Serrano and Federico Ochoa, 8-2. Loewenthal, ranked 24th in singles, defeated Pavlovich in straight sets in the No. 1 singles match by scores of 7-5, 6-4, extending his undefeated spring record to 7-0. Bere quickly rolled over Pablo Sahagun in No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 3 singles match, Wake Forest's Derrick Spice (Fr., N. Olmsted, OH) fought off Alejandro Salazar, winning by scores of 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Mike Murray (Jr., St. Petersburg, FL) took on Inglesias in No. 4 singles, pulling out the win 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6). Brendon and Kaufman clinched the singles shut out for the Deacs as Brendon defeated Francisco Diaz in straight sets in the No. 5 singles match, 6-1, 6-3 and Kaufmann picked up a win in the No. 6 match over Ochoa, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
Wake Forest improves its record to 6-1 with the win and ETSU falls to 2-2 with the loss. The Demon Deacons return to action next weekend when they host No. 23 Georgia Tech at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 3 in the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center.
