WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team heads into the home stretch of the season, looking for a strong finish to earn a better seed in the ACC Tourney and put themselves in position for an NCAA bid. The Deacs, ranked as high as No. 19 in this week's polls, host 10th ranked South Carolina on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm, then travel to Chapel Hill for a big ACC match with North Carolina on Sunday at 2:00 pm.

LAST WEEK'S WRAP-UP
Senior midfielder Kyle Bachmeier (Winston-Salem, NC) set up three goals to tie the Wake Forest all-time assist record as the Demon Deacons blew past visiting Charleston Southern, 6-2, on Tuesday night. Bachmeier's three set-ups pushed his career total to 24 assists, tying the career mark set by Mark Erwin from 1980-83. Senior midfielder Serge Daniv (Lviv, Ukraine) and sophomore forward Ben Stafford (Signal Mountain, TN) each contributed two goals in the win. Daniv opened the scoring just 12:53 into the match, stealing a pass from the CSU netminder to a defender and tapping it in the net. The Buccaneers tied it up at 26:21, but Stafford scored two goals in a span of 3:10 to give Wake a two-goal cushion. CSU cut the deficit to one early in the second period, but the Deacs answered with a three-goal barrage by junior forward Greg Krauss (Clearwater, FL), Daniv, and sophomore forward Jaron Barbee (Hinckley, OH) in a span of 7:36 to put the game away. The Deacs dominated the game offensively, outshooting the Bucs 29-5 and holding a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. On Saturday, Wake dropped a hard-fought match to ACC foe Maryland by a score of 2-1. The Deacs went up 1-0 in the first half on a goal by Krauss, but Maryland answered just five minutes later to knot it up at 1-1. The Terps got the go-ahead goal at the 65:54 mark and held off a late offensive push by WFU to seal the decision. The game was tightly contested, with each squad managing 10 shots on goal.

NEXT UP FOR THE DEACS
South Carolina (11-3) has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the polls this fall and currently holds an NSCAA ranking of No. 10. The Gamecocks boast a stifling defense which has allowed opponents just nine goals in 14 games, posting eight shutouts and a team GAA of 0.63. Netminder Henry Ring has made 76 saves and owns a .894 save percentage. Offensively, USC averages about 2.5 goals per game and is led by junior forwards John Harr (7g, 7a) and Jonas Myllenberg (7g, 6a). The Gamecocks have won three straight, including a 2-1 decision over No. 19 UNC Charlotte on Saturday.

BACHMEIER TIES WAKE FOREST ALL-TIME ASSIST RECORD
The heart and soul of the Deacon team this year is undoubtedly senior Kyle Bachmeier (Winston-Salem, NC), one of the top middies in the ACC and the Deacs' primary offensive playmaker. An unselfish player with outstanding field vision and ball distribution skills, Bachmeier has tallied two goals and a team-high seven assists thus far in 1998. With his three set-ups vs. Charleston Southern, Bachmeier tied the Wake Forest career record of 24 assists, set by Mark Erwin from 1980-83. He needs just one more assist to break the mark. He also ranks sixth on the WFU all-time points list with 50 (13g, 24a). A four-year starter, Bachmeier spent the offseason playing with the nation's top collegiate players in the adidas summer league.

DANIV'S RETURN SPARKS THE DEACON MIDFIELD
Not coincidentally, the Deacs' recent offensive explosion has occurred roughly about the time that senior midfielder Serge Daniv (Lviv, Ukraine) has returned to the lineup in full force. An explosive playmaker who earned All-ACC and third-team All-America honors in 1996, Daniv suffered knee injury in '96 which sidelined him for over a year. He has eased his way back into the lineup this fall, earning his first start in Wake's 2-1 upset of No. 1 Washington (where he assisted on the game's opening goal). He has started seven of the last eight games and has five goals and two assists on the year. With 48 career points (17g, 14a), Daniv ranks sixth all-time at WFU in points, ninth in goals, and 10th in assists.

EVANS PUTTING TOGETHER AN ALL-AMERICA CAMPAIGN
Wake's defense is led by junior All-America candidate Chad Evans (LaPlata, MD), a second-team All-ACC and third-team All-South Region pick last year. Evans has taken his game to a new level this fall, cementing his spot as one of the nation's top marking backs. Routinely assigned to cover the opponent's top striker, he has shut down some of the most explosive players in collegiate soccer, including UVa's Chris Albright and Washington's Wes Hart. He has earned All-Tournament honors twice this fall, and tallied two goals and five assists. Evans was a member of the 1997 U-20 national team and played in the prestigious addidas summer league in '98.

KRAUSS KICKS OFFENSE INTO HIGH GEAR
It didn't take long for junior transfer Greg Krauss (Clearwater, FL) to make the switch from field goals to soccer goals. Krauss, in his first season of collegiate soccer after two years as a placekicker for the Ohio U. football team, has emerged as the Deacs' leading scorer this season. Krauss has started all 15 games and contributed 10 goals and two assists, becoming the first Deac to tally double-digit goals in a season since John Duguid in 1991. He posted his first career hat-trick on Oct. 6th, netting three goals in the Deacs' 6-1 win over UNC Asheville. An outstanding youth soccer player, Krauss continued to play club soccer while at OU, leading his Clearwater team to the U-19 National title in 1997 and earning tournament MVP honors.

DEACONS BEGIN WITH "D"
Joining the aforementioned Evans in the Deacon backfield are two equally impressive defenders in junior marking back David Kawesi-Mukooza (Williamsville, NY) and sophomore sweeper Brock Hilpert (Durham, NC). Kaweesi-Mukooza, who started in the midfield last season, has made a remarkably smooth transition to marking back, contributing a goal, three assists, and a team-high three back saves this fall. And Hilpert, known as "the rock" to his teammates for his smart, consistent play, has blossomed into one of the ACC's top sweepers. Hilpert has also contributed four assists this fall.

STAFFORD HAVING A STRONG SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN
Sophomore forward Ben Stafford (Signal Mountain, TN), who ranked as the team's fourth-leading scorer as a freshman last fall, continues to be one of the Deacs' top offensive weapons this fall. Stafford has played in all 15 games, starting 10, and ranks as the team's second leading scorer with 16 points (5g, 6a). Those six assists rank him second on the team in set-ups, behind all-time assist leader Kyle Bachmeier.

SEALE MAKES AN IMPRESSIVE ROOKIE DEBUT
Freshmen midfielder Jamal Seale (Overland Park, KS) has made an impressive rookie debut with the Deacons, starting all 15 games and ranking as the team's third-leading scorer overall (5g, 4a). In his first week as a collegian, Seale tallied three goals and two assists, leading WFU to the Nike-Wake Forest Classic title and earning Tournament MVP, ACC Co-Player of the Week, and Soccer America Team of the Week honors. He also scored a goal in the Deacs' 2-1 upset of No. 1 Washington.

LONTEEN LOST TO BROKEN LEG
Freshman midfielder Chris Lonteen (Rolling Meadows, IL) was lost for the rest of the regular season when he suffered a broken fibula vs. UNC Asheville on Oct. 6th, but he may be back in the lineup in time for postseason play. Lonteen played in all of the Deacs' first 10 games, starting eight, and tallied four goals and an assist.
