Wake Forest-Virginia Tech Game Notes
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 1 Wake Forest welcomes ACC foe Virginia Tech to Spry Stadium on Saturday night in the Fall Sports Spotlight Game of the Week. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. (ET) and will be aired live on the web by ACC Select. In conjunction with the game, Wake Forest will be hosting the 2008 KICKAIDS 3v3 World Cup Tournament. All proceeds from the event benefit Grassroot Soccer, an organization dedicated to using soccer in the fight against AIDS in Africa. The tournament begins early on Saturday afternoon and the championship game will be held during halftime of the match between the Deacons and Hokies. Wake Forest is coming off a 3-0 victory at Elon on Wednesday night. Junior forward Zack Schilawski netted two goals, the fourth multi-goal game of his career, while fellow junior forward Cody Arnoux also scored a goal. Marcus Tracy came off the bench to add two second half assists. Junior goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald made three saves in the game en route to recording his sixth shut out of the season. Fitzgerald lowered his goals against average on the season to 0.59. Wake Forest is looking to open ACC play with a 3-0 record. The Deacons have only won their first three conference games of the season once in school history, starting the 2002 season with a 3-0 record in conference play. The Deacons will also be looking to extend their unbeaten streak at Spry Stadium. Wake Forest has either won or tied its last 26 matches at home. A win or a tie would equal Indiana for the eighth longest home unbeaten streak in NCAA history. Virginia Tech enters Saturday's match with a 3-5-1 record, including an 0-3-0 mark in ACC play. The Hokies have dropped conference matches to Duke, Clemson and Virginia. Virginia Tech is coming off a 2-1 victory over George Washington on Tuesday night. The Hokies are led by Emmanuel Akogyeram, who has scored four goals on the season and leads the team with nine points. James Gilson leads the team in assists with three. Stefan Caulfield and Brendan Dunn have split time in goal for the Hokies. Caulfield has played in six games on the season, recording a 1.83 goals against average, while Dunn has played in five games, compiling a 2.32 GAA. Wake Forest and Virginia Tech are meeting for the 15th time in series history. The Deacons lead the all-time series 10-2-2. Wake has either won or tied its last eight meetings against Virginia Tech, including a 2-0 victory in the semifinals of the 2007 College Cup.
