Sept. 27, 2000 DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's soccer team defeated Davidson 2-0 and rose above the .500 mark, improving its record to 4-3-1 on the year. Junior midfielder Jamal Seale scored his first goal of the season just 59 seconds into the second half and it proved to be the gamewinner.
Both goals came into the second half for the Deacons as Seale put the Deacons on the board when he took a ball that came through the top of the box from Vicente Bastidas. Seale aimed a right-footer past the lunging Davidson keeper, Soren Johnson, low on the right side. Ben Stafford was also credited with an assist on the play.
Davidson knocked on the door several times in the second half pushing extra players into the offensive end. The Deacons took advantage and put the game away with a breakaway goal by Stafford. Stafford, now with a team-leading six goals, made a long, 70-yard run before unleashing a blast that found the lower right-hand corner.
Senior keeper Rob Vartughian was solid in net, making three saves and posting his second shutout in the last three games.
"I was pleased with our defensive effort tonight. We did a nice job of limiting their scoring opportunities and creating some of our own," head coach Jay Vidovich. "I liked way we came out in the second half. We'd like to be able to score goals early on in both halves. That's a sign of a good team."
The teams played a physical but scoreless first half. A total of 19 fouls were whistled in the first half, 12 of which called on the Deacons. Wake Forest was close to taking a lead in the 33rd minute but a Davidson player clearned Chris Lonteen's shot off the line. The Deacons had a golden opportunity in the half's final seconds. Ben Stafford's shot as time expired sailed over the net.
The Deacs return to ACC action at Spry Stadium for a Sunday matinee
against Maryland. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
