Wake Forest Men's Soccer Falls to No. 5 Washington in Double OT Heartbreaker
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Sophomore forward Rees Bettinger scored with 1:58 remaining in the second overtime to lift No. 5 Washington over No. 22 Wake Forest, 1-0, in front of 1,573 fans at the Wake Forest-Nike Soccer Classic, held at Spry Stadium on Friday night.
Senior forward Tim Lawson assisted on the game-winner, sending a long cross from the right side of the goal. Bettinger, who was breaking down the left side toward the net, deflected the ball past Wake goalkeeper Sean Conner in the waning minutes of the game.
Washington (3-0-1) controlled the ball for much of the game and outshot the Deacons by a 24-14 margin. The Wake Forest defense did a tremendous job in containing the Husky attack, however, and Conner made several huge saves in net to keep Wake in the game. The Huskies failed to convert on two key scoring opportunites late in the second half, as one wide-open shot deflected off the crossbar and a penalty shot, taken by Ian Russell at 86:26, sailed high over the cage.
Wake falls to 3-2 overall while Washington improves to 3-0-1. The Huskies face UNC Charlotte on Sunday at 1:00 pm in the second round of the Wake Forest-Nike Classic, while the Deacons take on New Hampshire at 3:00 pm.
