Nov. 9, 2005 CARY, N.C. - Maryland senior All-American Jason Garey scored a goal midway through the second-half to lead the top seed and No. 1 ranked Terps past Wake Forest, 2-1, in the 2005 ACC Tournament quarterfinals Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Deacs drop to 11-7-2. Garey, who was held in check for most of the match, finally found some space inside the Demon Deacon penalty area. Stephen King took possession of the ball near midfield and spotted substitute Graham Zusi streaking down the sideline. Zusi took one dribble and sent a ball back across the goal mouth to Garey. The ACC Offensive Player of the Year slotted the ball past a charging Wake Forest netminder Brian Edwards from eight yards out. The goal was Garey's ACC best 19th of the season. The 19 goals ranks second in the NCAA. Wake Forest had a pair of excellent scoring opportunities in the closing minutes of the contest, but couldn't find the back of the net. In the 82nd minute, junior defender Steven Curfman's blast off a free kick from just outside the box sailed wide of the goal. The Demon Deacons had another great scoring chance thwarted in the 84th minute, when Ryan Solle's shot from inside the box was blocked by a sliding Terrapin defender. Maryland (15-3-1) drew first blood in the contest when King converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute. After Maryland's Robbie Rogers collided with Wake Forest defender Pat Phelan in the box, Maryland was awarded the penalty kick. King stepped up and drilled the ball home to the left side to break the scoreless tie. The Demon Deacons would even the score just over nine minutes later, again on a penalty kick. Wake Forest's Jamie Franks was fouled in the Maryland box, and Curfman made good on the ensuing free chance with a rocket shot into the lower left corner to level the score in the 40th minute.
The Terps held a slim, 9-8, advantage in shots. Edwards was forced to make just one save for the Demon Deacons, while Maryland goalkeeper Chris Seitz was not credited with a save. Wake Forest will now set its sight on the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Despite the loss, the Deacs have most likely done enough to secure a spot in the tournament. Wake Forest will await word on its opponent when the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament Selection Show is aired on Monday, Nov. 14 at 4:00 on ESPNews.
