Oct. 30, 2005 RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 19 Wake Forest men's soccer team spotted No. 17 NC State an early 2-0 first-half lead that the Demon Deacons were unable to overcome in a 2-1 loss Sunday afternoon at Method Road. With the defeat, Wake Forest drops to 10-5-2 overall and 1-4-2 in the ACC, while the Wolfpack improves to 10-5-1 and 4-3-1 in the league. NC State struck first in the sixth minute of action. Senior John Queeley won the ball near midfield along the right sideline. He played a through ball to classmate Aaron King in the center of the field just outside the 18-yard box. King collected the pass and netted his 14th goal of the season at the 5:16 mark. The Wolfpack would make it 2-0 with senior Bryant Salters' goal in the 26th minute. Queeley once again started the play. He played a ball down the line into space for Salter, who collected the pass and darted into the Wake penalty box. Salter beat the Wake keeper with a shot into the upper left corner and gave the Pack a 2-0 lead at the 25:24 mark. Wake Forest would come right back and notch a goal of its own just over a minute later. Junior defender Steven Curfman took a corner kick and sent it toward the near post, where sophomore defender Julian Valentin headed the ball in at the 26:50. The goal was Valentin's third of the season, while the assist was Curfman's second. The scored would remain that way into halftime. Wake Forest pushed players forward the entire second-half, punishing the NC State penalty area. The Demon Deacons had opportunity after opportunity, but were unable to get the equalizer. The Deacs outshot the Wolfpack, 10-3, in the final 45 minutes and 15-7 for the match. NC State goalkeeper Jorge Gonzalez made numerous key saves in the game, including a spectacular stop in the waning minutes, to preserve the win. He finished with five saves. The victory for the Wolfpack was their first over Wake Forest since 1995 -- ending the Demon Deacons 12-match winning streak.
