WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Senior midfielder Steve Armas scored at the 65:54 mark to lift the No. 20 Maryland men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over host Wake Forest in front of 2,131 fans at Spry Stadium on Saturday night. The loss drops the Demon Deacons' record to 10-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the ACC, while the Terrapins improve to 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the ACC.
The game was tightly contested from the opening whistle, with each team managing 10 shots on goal for the match. Junior forward Greg Krauss got the Deacons on the board first at the 35:43 mark, scoring on a breakaway off assists from senior midfielder Serge Daniv and sophomore forward Ben Stafford. Maryland tied things up less than five minutes later, however, as junior forward Jason Cropley sent a long cross to senior forward Pierre Venditti, who was alone in front of the Deacons' net and punched it in for the score. Maryland went up 2-1 in the second half as Armas deflected a shot from senior middie Randy Merkel past Wake netminder Sean Conner, and the Deacons manage an equalizer before time expired. Conner made four saves in goal for WFU, while sophomore Christian Lewis had two saves for Maryland.
Wake Forest hosts No. 13 South Carolina on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm.
