No. 2 Deacons Take Carolina Nike Classic Title with 2-0 Sunday Win

Sept. 2, 2007

Box Score

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 2 Wake Forest men's soccer team (2-0-0) wrapped up play at the Nike Carolina Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Monmouth at the University of North Carolina. The victory was the title-winner for the tournament.

Cody Anroux shined in the final game of the tourney, firing a missle in the 41st minute from a pass by Zack Schilawski to get the Deacs on the board.

"We've been working on long distance shots in practice," Arnoux said. "I just wanted to get it in frame and went for it."

Less than three minutes later Arnoux emerged from the pack to land a header from Sam Cronin's corner kick to set Wake's final tally at 2-0.

The Hawks, last season's Northeast Conference champions, were only able to fire five shots throughout the contest and just two shots in the second half. WFU goalkeeper Brian Edwards recorded four saves, brining his career total to 222.

"We really took a hold of the game quickly," Arnoux said. "They were pinned in from the beginning."

WFU's Corben Bone, Evan Brown, Cody Arnoux and Pat Phelan were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances in the Labor Day weekend contests.

Freshman Bone started both contests and landed a goal and assist for Brown's game-winner on the tourney's opening night against No. 21 Old Dominion. Phelan anchored the backline, helping hold ODU scoreless through a half and two overtimes as well as shutting out Monmouth on Sunday.

The Deacs will host the Wake Forest University tournament next weekend at Spry Stadium. North Carolina will open with Bradley on Friday night at 5 p.m., followed by WFU vs. Akron at 7:30. The complete schedule can be found at WFU Tournament Central.
