WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Austin da Luz scored the game's only goal early in the first-half to lead the No. 16 Demon Deacons past William & Mary, 1-0, Sunday at the 2006 Wake Forest adidas Classic at Spry Stadium. Wake Forest and North Carolina each finished the tournament undefeated, but the Deacs were awarded the championship on goal differential. da Luz, son of current Wake Forest women's soccer coach Tony, tallied his first career goal just under 12 minutes into the match. The freshman midfielder closed a fury of Demon Deacon chances with a shot from just inside the six-yard box. Senior Ryan Solle's initial blast was stopped by a diving William & Mary goalkeeper Brennan Wergley. Sophomore Sam Cronin then blasted the rebound, but Wergley made another outstanding save. Wergley even stopped junior Julian Valentin's attempt from point blank range, but da Luz slotted home the Deacons' fourth attempt inside the Tribe's penalty area. The Wake Forest defense made the early goal stand. The Demon Deacons, who surrendered only a single shot in Friday night's 5-0 victory over UCF, allowed William & Mary just four shots the entire match. Redshirt junior Brian Edwards recorded his second consecutive shutout and 20th of his career. The Charlotte, N.C. native made two saves on the afternoon. Wake Forest out-shot William & Mary, 14-4, and were awarded seven corner kicks, while the Tribe did not earn one. da Luz, Valentin, Solle and Cronin were each named to the 2006 Wake Forest adidas Classic All-Tournament team.
The Demon Deacons return to action next weekend for the Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field. Wake Forest will face Penn State on Friday (5:00 pm) and Ohio State on Sunday (1:00 pm). 2006 Wake Forest adidas Classic All-Tournamen Team - WakeForestSports.com - |
