Connecticut, 1999

Bobby Muuss begins his sixth year at Wake Forest as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

On the field, Muuss works extensively with the goalkeepers. He also assists head coach Jay Vidovich in all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Demon Deacon program.

With Muuss alongside Vidovich, the Demon Deacons have reached heights unfamiliar to the program. Wake Forest has not only reached the NCAA Tournament each of the past five seasons, but the Deacs have entered two of those tournaments as the nation's top-seed and another as the third seed. In all, Wake Forest has captured a pair of ACC regular season championships and posted a record of 70-26-9 (.710) -- the most victories over any five-year span in school history.

Over the past two seasons, Muuss has worked with goalkeeper Brian Edwards. Edwards finished each season with nine shutouts -- tying the school record for most shutouts ever in a single-season each year. Edwards is just one shutout shy of the career school record.

Muuss has helped Wake Forest attract some of the top recruits in the entire country. Most recently, College Soccer News ranked the Deacons' incoming class as the ninth-best in the country. Soccer America rated the 2004 recruiting class as the second-best in the nation. College Soccer News also ranked the Demon Deacon class as the 16th-best in 2001, 12th in 2002, seventh in 2003 and sixth in 2004.

In 2002, Muuss guided William Hesmer to the best season a Wake Forest goalkeeper has ever had. Hesmer shattered the program's single-season goals against average, posting a 0.65 mark with seven shutouts. Hesmer's average was second-best in the NCAA. That enabled Hesmer to be named to the All-ACC first team, All-South honors and All-America recognition from Soccer America. Hesmer followed up the 2002 season with another All-American campaign last year.

Muuss' first season at Wake Forest coincided with the first season that Hesmer became a starter. He coached Hesmer to a 0.91 goals against average, the third-best mark in Wake Forest history and the best in more than 11 years. That performance led to second team All-ACC honors and All-South recognition.

"Bobby brings a lot to the table. He's won a national championship as a player and as an assistant coach. His knowledge of what it takes to win will help make Wake Forest a benchmark program," Vidovich said. "He comes from a tremendous lineage and the energy, enthusiasm and the commitment he brings will push our players to the next level."

"I'm blessed to be working with one of the nation's best coaches and such quality student-athletes at Wake Forest," Muuss said. "This program has developed into one of the premier not only in the ACC, but across the country."

Muuss came to Wake Forest after a four-year stint at the University of Connecticut where he served as a volunteer assistant coach. Over the course of four seasons, Muuss helped lead the Huskies to the 2000 National Championship title, three BIG EAST regular season titles, and two College Cup appearances. Muuss developed the goalkeepers, ranking them annually among the nation's best in several categories.

Under his direction, UConn's keepers broke records in career wins, shutouts and lowest single season goals against average. During Muuss' four seasons at UConn, his teams accumulated a combined overall record of 67-19-4 (.767), holding a No. 1 national ranking several times.

A native of East Islip, N.Y., Muuss transferred to UConn from Southern Connecticut State and earned his undergraduate degree in the spring of 1999 in communication science. While at Southern, Muuss was a member of the 1995 Division II National Championship Team.

He currently holds a USSF "B" coaching license. Muuss also serves as the North Carolina ODP Director of Goalkeeping and head coach of the Twin City 1990 Boys' club team.

Muuss and his wife, Keri, and their daughter, Camryn, live in Winston-Salem.
