The 1999 ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Wake Forest seeks its 19th ACC title as the Demon Deacons compete in the
45th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, held at the Old North
State Club in Uwharrie Point, N.C., on April 16-18. Four of the nine ACC
squads are currently ranked in the Mastercard Top 20, including two teams
in the top five (No. 2 Clemson and No. 4 Georgia Tech). Clemson is the
two-time defending conference champion, while the Tigers' Charles Warren,
now a rookie on the PGA Tour, won the ACC individual title in 1997 and 1998.
LAST TIME OUT
Wake Forest shot a consistent 297-299-298, but finished in a tie for 10th
place in a strong 12-team field at the BellSouth Yellow Pages
Intercollegiate in Cary, N.C. With a 54-hole total of 894, or 30-over par,
the Demon Deacons tied with Tulsa for 10th place in the standings, 25
strokes behind defending national champion UNLV, who won the team title by
four strokes. The top finishers for Wake Forest were junior Jamie
Gallacher (76-71-75) and senior Oscar Sanchez (74-77-71), both of whom tied
for 27th in the individual standings at 6-over par. The pair was 10
strokes back of the individual champion, New Mexico's Wil Collins (-4).
Senior Michael Capone (77-72-78) tied for 43rd at 11-over, while senior
Thomas Parker (71-81-76) finished 47th at 12-over. Freshman Jay Morgan
(76-79-76) placed 52nd at 15-over par.
HEAD COACH JERRY HAAS
Jerry Haas is in his second season as head coach of the Demon Deacons,
after having taken the reins of the Wake Forest program in September of
1997. A 1985 graduate of WFU and a four-time collegiate All-American, Haas
played nine years of professional golf, including four years on the PGA
Tour, before returning to his alma mater as a head coach.
THE DEACON LINEUP
Michael Capone (Sr, Cranston, RI)
1998-99 Avg: 73.1. Career Avg: 73.7. Playing in his third ACC Championships
...ranked No. 31 in the Mastercard individual rankings...owns team's lowest
stroke average...recorded back-to-back top 10 finishes earlier this
spring...shot a career-low 66 at the Carpet Capital and tied his career-low
54-hole score (212) to finish in fifth place...the 66 was the lowest round
by a Deacon since Todd Lynch's school record-tying 63 in the fall of '96
...tied for 10th at the Schenkel Intercollegiate (+2)...sixth at the G.
Gunby Jordan in the fall (-1)...posted a team-low 73.3 fall average...15 of
his 28 rounds have been at or under par...placed sixth at the '97 NCAA
Championships to earn honorable mention All-America honors...was eighth at
the '97 ACC Championships and 37th at the ACCs last year...owns five career
top 10 finishes and 10 top 20s.
Oscar Sanchez (Sr, Canary Island, Spain)
1998-99 Avg: 75.1. Career Avg: 75.0. Returns for his third ACC
Championship... holds second-lowest average on the team...earned the first
top 10 finish since his sophomore year at the Seminole Classic, placing
sixth with a 147 (+3)...tied for the team lead at the BellSouth last week,
placing 27th with a 222 (+6)...also placed 66th at the Carpet Captial
(+12), 52nd at the Schenkel (+12), and 43rd at the Puerto Rico Classic (+8)
this spring...recorded a 75.21 average in five fall events...struggled
through the 1997-98 campaign with a team-high 77.5 stroke average...earned
All-ACC honors in 1997...was 22nd at the '97 ACCs and 21st as a freshman in
'96...won the Carpet Capital Classic in 1997, Wake's last individual
title...a member of the Spanish National Team.
Jamie Gallacher (Jr, Surrey, England)
1998-99 Avg: 75.8. Career Avg: 75.8. Competing in his first ACC
Championships...has played in three spring events...posted his best score
of the spring at the BellSouth last week, tying for the team lead in 27th
place at 6-over (222)...was 55th at the Carpet Capital Classic (+10) and
58th at the Seminole Classic (+13)...played in five fall tourneys,
recording a 75.9 stroke average...best career finish was a 24th place at
The Ridges Intercollegiate this fall, where he posted a career-low 219
(+3)...has recorded five rounds at or under par this year...played in three
spring events in 1998 and recorded a 75.9 average...the son of British
Ryder Cup standout Berhard Gallacher.
Thomas Parker (Sr, Laurinburg, NC)
1999-99 Avg: 77.1. Career Avg: 76.1. Playing in his first ACC
Championships ...has competed in four spring events...had his best outing
of the year with a 223 (+7) at the Carpet Capital Classic, finishing
40th...was 47th at the BellSouth Intercollegiate (+12) and placed 56th at
the Schenkel Intercollegiate (+13)...opened the spring with a 66th place
finish at the Puerto Rico Classic (+16)...competed in two fall events,
posting a 79.3 average...a fifth-year senior who has played in 17 career
events.
Juan Vizcaya (Sr, Madrid, Spain)
1998-99 Avg: 76.7. Career Avg: 75.9 Competing in his second ACC
Championships... has competed in three spring events...placed 55th at the
Carpet Capital (+10) and 65th at the Schenkel (+17)...was 70th at the
Puerto Rico Classic (+18)...posted a 76.3 average in two fall
events...finished 37th at the '98 ACC's...placed 77th at the '97 NCAA East
Regional...has shot 69 three times in his career...one career top 10
finish, an eighth place at the '96 ReliaStar Invitational... also a member
of the Spanish National Team.
WAKE IN THE ACCS
Wake Forest owns 18 ACC titles, far more than any other conference school,
and a Demon Deacon has captured the ACC individual title 20 times since the
tournament's inception in 1954. Wake's last conference title, however,
came 10 years ago, when Tim Straub took individual medalist honors and led
the '89 Deacs to the ACC crown. That '89 title sweep came after an
eight-year drought, dating back to 1980 when medalist Gary Hallberg led
Wake to victory. From 1967 to 1980, WFU dominated the conference tourney,
winning 13 team titles and 11 individual titles in a 14-year span. Former
Deacon Arnold Palmer won the first of Wake's 20 ACC individual titles at
the inaugural ACC Championships in 1954, while the Deacs' first ACC team
crown came the following year. Since the '89 season, the highest the
Deacons have placed at the ACCs is a third in 1997.
THE 1998 ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Despite a strong performance by a veteran team, Wake Forest finished sixth
at the 1998 ACC Championships. The Deacons carded a season-low 54-hole
score of 865 (+1), but still finished 29 strokes behind team champion
Clemson. Todd Lynch finished in the top 20 with an even-par 216, while Ray
Floyd, Jr. placed 26th (+2) and fired the lowest round by a Deacon all
season with a 68 in the second round. Ryan Gioffre placed 27th (+3), while
Michael Capone and Juan Vizcaya (+7) both tied for 37th place.

WAKE FOREST PRO AM SET FOR APRIL 19
When the Demon Deacons return from the ACC Championships, they will enjoy
one of the unique privileges of being a Wake Forest golfer - serving as
caddies for their predecessors at the annual Wake Forest Pro-Am on Monday,
April 19th. The event, which raises upwards of $125,000 annually for the
WFU golf programs, brings back a host of former Deacons such as Billy
Andrade, Jay Haas, Gary Hallberg, Scott Hoch, Joe Inman, Len Mattiace,
Arnold Palmer, Jay Sigel, Curtis Strange, Leonard Thompson, David Thore,
Lanny Wadkins, and Robert Wrenn. This year, the player with the lowest
stroke average will caddy for the legendary Palmer - an honor which senior
Michael Capone looks certain to receive.
CHIP SHOTS
The Deacons recorded their lowest team round (285) and tournament score
(880) at the Carpet Capital Classic...the BellSouth marked the first time
that the Deacons' had to drop one of Michael Capone's rounds...Capone and
Oscar Sanchez lead the team with 92.9% of their rounds counted; the two
have played in every event this year...Capone has participated in 34 of
Wake Forest's 36 tournaments over the past three years...the only Deacon to
record a round under 70 this year is Capone, who has posted three 69s and a
66.
