Webb Simpson saved his best for last. The Wake Forest senior shot his lowest round of the week Sunday, a two-under 68, to finish tied for 31st at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando.
Simpson was four-under at the par-70 Bay Hill Club and Lodge, but double-bogeyed hole 16. The Raleigh-native carded a 71-71-70-68=280 to finish the tournament at even par.
Simpson was the top performer with Wake Forest connections in the event, finishing ahead of Len Mattiace (72nd), Billy Andrade (72nd) and Bill Haas (109th).
Simpson recorded 14 birdies for the four rounds in Bay Hill.
Tiger Woods won the event after nailing a 24-foot putt on 18 to beat Bart Bryant by one stroke. The victory is Woods' his fifth consecutive tour win and the 64th of his career.
Simpson will return to Winston-Salem to face sophomore Brendan Gielow in the Wake Forest team matchplay championship. Simpson will be trying for this third team matchplay title in three years.
