Wake Forest Men Place Fifth at Topy Cup
TANAGURA, Japan - The Wake Forest men's golf team shot a 3-over-par
291 in the final round of competition to finish in fifth place at the 1997 Topy
Cup Championships, held at Tanagura Country Club in Tanagura, Japan. Among
collegiate men's teams from the U.S., the Deacons placed fourth.
The Deacons, playing under the direction of first-year Coach Jerry Haas,
finished the three-day tournament at 30-over par, with a total team
score of 894. Wake was 24 strokes behind Texas Christian University, who won
the tournament with a score of 870. WFU senior Todd Lynch (Winston-Salem,
NC/North Forsyth) fired a 2-under-par 70 to lead the Deacons in the final day
of competition, improving his individual finish to 23rd with a 9-over 225.
Junior Michael Capone (Cranston, RI/Bishop Hendricken) and senior Ryan Gioffre
(Greensboro, NC/Greensboro Day) shot a 76 and a 71, respectively, to finish in
a tie for 16th place at 7-over. Junior Thomas Parker (Laurinburg, NC/Scotland)
shot a 74 to finish 23rd (+9), while junior Oscar Sanchez (Canary Islands,
Spain) shot a 78 to finish 48th (+21).
The Topy Cup is a three-day, 54-hole tournament featuring 12 intercollegiate
teams from Japan and the United States.
