Deacons Finish Sixth at Rolex Match Play Championships
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-The Wake Forest men's golf team earned a sixth-place finish at the Rolex Match Play Team Championships, held Sunday and Monday at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, FL. UNLV won the three-round tournament, defeating Clemson 3-2 in the championship match.
Seeded sixth out of eight teams, the Demon Deacons fell to third-seeded Texas Christian in the opening round on Sunday morning, 4.5-0.5, moving into the consolation bracket of the tournament. In the second round on Sunday afternoon, Wake defeated No. 7 seed Southern Cal, 3-2. In Monday's final round, the Deacs tied fifth-seeded Arizona State, 2.5-2.5, but ASU won on a tiebreaker, having won more total holes in the round.
Seniors Ray Floyd, Jr. (Miami Beach, FL/Miami Country Day) and Todd Lynch (Winston-Salem, NC/North Forsyth) each went 1-1-1 in individual match play, while junior Michael Capone (Cranston, RI/Bishop Hendricken), junior Oscar Sanchez (Canary Islands, Spain/Leadbetter Academy-FL), and freshman Patrick Damron (Orlando, FL/Dr. Phillips), went 1-2 over three rounds.
In match play competition, each of a team's five members plays a single 18-hole match against one of the opposing team's members. The team that wins the most individual matches advances as the winner.
