MACON, Ga. - Freshman Daniel Meggs posted an ever-par round of 70 to pace the Wake Forest men's golf team in the opening round of the Brickyard Collegiate Championship at the Brickyard at Riverside. The Deacons posted a 297 are currently tied for 6th after 18 holes.

Wake made a bit of a comeback as they turned at 9-over par and were tied for 13th. After 12 holes, the Deacs were 13-over and found themselves in last place. However, four birdies on the par-5 sixth hole and another birdie from Meggs on eight steadied the round.

Meggs made one birdie and one bogie on the back nine to make the turn at even-par 35. He then bogied No. 1 and No. 5 to go to 2-over but birdies at six and eight brought him home in even.

The 70 was Meggs' lowest round by score this season as he also carded a 1-under par 71 in the second round of the Carpet Capital earlier this season.

Brendan Gielow, who won the VCU Shootout almost two weeks ago, had a bit of a roller coaster round in posting a 4-over 74. He made eight pars and a bogie on his first nine and would start his second nine with back-to-back birdies on holes one and two. A double bogie on three halted his momentum and after three pars on holes 4-6, Gielow would bogie his final three holes of the day. He will start the second round tied for 25th.

Junior Travis Wadkins made a pair of birdies in his round of 76. He made the turn at 2-over 37 and made bogies on the first four holes of the front nine before a birdie at six brought him home in the 39. Wadkins will start the second round tied for 47th.

Senior Dustin Groves got off to a rocky start, carding a 41 on the opening nine but he responded with a birdie and two bogies on the second nine to card a 77. He is currently tied for 58th.

Freshman Lee Bedford had a tough opening round, carding nines of 41-37 for a round of 78. He is tie for 65th after the first round.

Georgia Tech got a 3-under par 67 from Cameron Triangle to card a round of 2-over 282 to lead by eight shots after 18 holes. Triangle also leads the individual race by one shot over Drew Weaver of Virginia Tech.

The second round will start at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Live scoring of the second round can be found at www.golfstat.com.
