MANAKIN SABOT, Va. - Wake Forest fired a 15-under par 269, in the second round of the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club to take a 17-shot lead after 36 holes.

Wake's round of 269 marks the first time a Demon Deacon team has ever carded a round under 270. It also ties the school record for the lowest 18-hole score in relation to par at 15-under on the par-71 Hermitage Country Club layout.

The last time Wake carded a round of 15-under was during the 1985-86 season when the team posted 15-under 273 in both the second and third rounds of the Chris Schenkel Invitational.

The team has four players in the top-13 and will take a 17-shot lead into the final round.

After a 3-under 68 in the opening round, junior Brendan Gielow made seven birdies and an eagle in his second round for a career-low 7-under 64. At 10-under, Gielow is tied for the lead with Wichita State's Dustin Garza.

Gielow made five birdies and a couple of bogies in the first round for a 3-under 68 and would start his second round with a bogie on the par four ninth. But he then made birdies at 11, 14, 16 and 17 to card a 4-under 31 on the back nine.

He made another bogie on one but rebounded with birdies on two and three to move back to four under par for the round. After a par on four, he made an eagle at the 543-yard par-5 fifth and a birdie at the short par-4 sixth to grab the lead at 10-under. A closing par at seven would give him a round of 64. Gielow made a total of 12 birdies and one eagle in his 36 holes Monday.

Senior Dustin Groves also had a tremendous day, posting a career-low 65 in the afternoon after a round of 3-under 68 in morning. He is currently tied for third at 9-under, just one shot behind Gielow and Garza.

Groves opened his morning round with a bogie at No. 8 but got it right back with birdies at 10 and 11. After a bogie at 12, he would notch birdies at 16 and 17 before closing with a birdie at the short par-3 seventh for a round of 68.

In the afternoon, Groves made seven birdies and just one bogie for a stellar round of 65. This time he started with a par on No. 8 and made birdies at 9, 10, and 11 to move to 6-under for the tournament. He would then birdie 15 and 16 for a back nine of 31 before two more birdies at No. 2 and No. 6 jumped him to 10-under. A closing bogie at seven was his only blemish in the second round.

Freshman Lee Bedford and junior Travis Wadkins also posted a pair of under-par rounds on the day.

Bedford opened the morning round with birdies at 11, 13 and 14 to jump to 3-under par and was the early leader. He made bogies at No. 18 and No. 4 but finished with three birdies in his final four holes to post an opening round 67.

He would then birdie the first two holes of his second round to climb to 6-under par. Bedford then bogied 11 and proceeded to make 15 straight pars to close with a 1-under 71. He is tied for seventh at 5-under through 36 holes.

Like Bedford, Wadkins had two birdies, 15 pars and one bogie in his first round to post a 1-under 71. He started the second round with a birdie on 11 but bogies on three and four dropped him to 1-over for the round. However, the Dallas, Tex., native responded with birdies at six and seven and closed with a pair of pars for his second straight 71. He will start the final round tied for 13th.

Sophomore Justin Bryant rounded out the Demon Deacon scorers with rounds of 75 and 80. Bryant carded a pair of 69s at this tournament last year and he will look to get back in the mix tomorrow.

Redshirt junior Marc Gladson, playing as an individual this weekend, opened with an even par round of 71. He made four birdies and four bogies in the round and had it to 2-under at one point.

Gladson will start the final round tied for 62nd after a round of 77 in the afternoon.

Virginia and Virginia Tech are tied for second at 9-under par while host VCU is a shot further back at 8-under.

The final round is set to begin at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. Live scoring of the final round can be found at www.golfstat.com.
