BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Wake Forest men's golf team sits in 11th place after a long first day at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate Monday played at the famed Shoal Creek Golf Club. Wake shot a 309 in the opening round and followed it with 295 in the second round. The Deacs will start the day on Tuesday just two shots out of ninth place and eights shots back of sixth place. "The course was playing hard today," said head coach Jerry Haas. "The rough was up and it made for a very long day because we didn't play very well. We were just a few swings away from shooting a very good score in the second round but wound up with a 295." "We just need to come out tomorrow and play a lot better and try to catch the teams in front of us," Haas continued. Junior Brendan Gielow and freshman Lee Bedford led the Deacons with matching 36-hole totals of 7-over 151. Senior Dustin Groves is just one shot back at 8-over 152 while redshirt junior Marc Gladson is a shot further back at 153. Freshman Daniel Meggs rounded out the Deacon five with a two-round total of 157. Gielow posted a 2-over 74 in the opening round on three birdies and five bogies. He started the second round rocky, playing holes 10, 11 and 12 at 4-over. Gielow went on to card a 42 on his first nine but rebounded with a pair of birdies and just one bogie coming home in 1-under 35 for a total of 77. Bedford had a rough start to the day as he was 5-over through his first four holes. He held the round together with just two bogies over the final 14 holes to post a 79 in the opening round. In the second round, the Cary, N.C., native continued his solid play, making four birdies and two bogies to turn at 2-under 34. However, three bogies compared to just one birdie on the second nine gave him an even-par round of 72. The round was tied the lowest of the day for any Deacon. Groves struggled to an 80 in the opening round but used an eagle and a pair of birdies in the second round to card an even-par 72. He will start the final round in a tie for 31st place. Gladson, playing in his first tournament since the spring of 2007, made seven birdies on the day, the most on the team, but three doubles and a triple burdened his day. He went on to card a 79 in round one and a 2-over 74 in the second round. Meggs posted rounds of 77-80 to finish at 13-over 157. He will start the final round in a tie for 52nd. Zach Sucher of host UAB cared rounds of 72-69 for a 36-hole total of 3-under 141. He leads Texas Tech's Will Griffin by one shot heading into the final round. On the team side, Baylor had an even-par round of 288 in the morning and followed it with a 5-over 293 in the afternoon to lead LSU by eight shots after 36-holes. The Deacons will start the third round at 8:35 a.m. Tuesday morning. Live scoring for the final round can be found on www.golfstat.com.
