ROCKY FACE, Ga. - Senior Dustin Groves and freshman Daniel Meggs each carded a 1-under 71 to lead Wake Forest to a 290 in the second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga.

For Groves, it was his second straight 71 and he sits in a tie sixth place, three shots back heading into the final round. Groves has recorded a total of 14 birdies over the first two rounds.

A rocky finish plagued the Deacons on day two. At the turn, Wake was 3-over as a team but four straight birdies from junior Brendan Gielow on holes 10-13, an eagle from Meggs on 12 and a pair of birdies from Groves had the Deacs at 5-under.

However, Gielow went four-over on his last four holes and Groves finished up 1-over on his final five.

Despite the tough finish, Gielow still managed a 1-over 73 and currently stands in a tie for 35th.

"Dustin and Brendan each had a chance to go low today but a few bad shots just got them," said head coach Jerry Haas.

After the eagle on 12, Meggs finished with a bogie on 14 and a birdie on 15 to also sit in a tie for 35th at 4-over par through 36 holes.

Freshman Lee Bedford birdied his first two holes of the day but posted bogies on 4 and 5 and a double on nine to shoot 2-over 38 on the front nine. He responded with eight pars and just one bogie on the back for his second straight 75. He is currently in a tie for 55th.

"Daniel rebounded with a nice round and Lee played better than a 75 today," said Haas. "Travis was just a little frustrated by that one hole but he still had some good holes."

Despite carding four birdies on the day, junior Travis Wadkins could not recover from a quadruple-bogie on 10 and wound of carding an 80. His 36-hole total of 155 has him in a tie for 79th.

As a team, Wake is in eighth place at 10-over through two rounds. The Deacons will have work to do in the final round as they trail Tennessee-Chattanooga by 12 shots.

"Over the two rounds, we have had 33 birdies and two eagles and we're ten over par," said Haas. "If we can go out and play well tomorrow and eliminate the big numbers, I think we have a chance. The birdies are there. We'll go out in the early wave tomorrow and try to make it happen."

Tennessee-Chattanooga carded the round of the tournament thus far with a 5-under 283 in the second round. East Tennessee State, the first round leader, shot a 291 in the second round and stands second at 2-over.

Clemson standout Kyle Stanley posted six birdies en route to a 66 on Saturday and leads by two shots at 5-under heading into the final round.
