Senior Dustin Groves fired an up-and-down round of 1-under par 71 to pace the Wake Forest men's golf team to a 296 in the opening round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Ga. As a team, the Deacons are currently tied for ninth while Groves also sits tied for ninth individually. Groves' round featured just four pars as he had an astonishing eight birdies. He posted a 1-under 35 on the back nine, his first nine of the day. He then made the turn and birdied both one and two. After bogies on three and four, he had a nice birdie on six and another on eight to go to 3-under par, but a double bogie on nine gave him and even-par 36 coming in. Juniors Brendan Gielow and Travis Wadkins carded rounds of 3-over 75 in the opening round. Freshman Lee Bedford, playing in his first collegiate tournament, posted an eagle on the 15th hole and also carded an opening round 75. All three players will start the second round tied for 36th. Freshman Daniel Meggs rounded out the Demon Deacon five with a 77. He currently stands in a tie for 64th. East Tennessee State carded an opening round 287 to lead by two shots over Central Florida. Blayne Barber of Central Florida carded a 4-under 68 to lead the individual race. The Deacons will start the second round at 10 a.m. Saturday morning and the round will be covered by Golfstat's Live Scoring. The forecast is favorable for Saturday in Rocky Face as there is just a 20 percent chance of rain and a projected high of 90 degrees.
