NEW LONDON, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team is in fifth place after one round of the ACC Championships, taking place at the Old North State Club in Uwharrie Point. The Deacons turned in a two-over 290 on Friday, 19 strokes back of current leader Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets ran away from the field early, shooting a 17-under 271 in the first round.

Clemson is second at eight-under, followed by North Carolina (-5) and NC State (even). Wake sits one stroke ahead of Duke and Virginia, who are tied for sixth.

Deacon sophomore Bill Haas is currently in a five-way tie for eighth place after shooting a team-best two-under 70 on Friday. He is four strokes back of North Carolina's Dustin Bray, the current leader after carding a 66. Two Georgia Tech players - Kris Mikkelsen and Nicholas Thompson - are tied for second at five under.

Demon Deacons Brent Wanner and Chris Yoder are tied for 25th after shooting a one-over 73. Senior Jay Morgan is one stroke back in 30 with a 74. Junior Chad Wilfong turned in a 76 on Friday, but finished on a positive note by sinking a 75-foot putt on the 18th hole for birdie..

Second round action takes place Saturday. Wake Forest, paired with NC State and Duke, will tee off beginning at 9:30 a.m.
