AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team is currently in second place after two rounds of the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational, held at the Forest Hills Golf Club.

With very low scores being carded across the board in the first two rounds, the Deacons have a 36-hole total of 16-under 560. Wake is five strokes back of Tennessee, which leads the 18-team field with a 21-under 555. The Deacons shot a seven-under 281 in the first round to lead the field after the opening 18, and shot a scorching 279 on Saturday's second round, its lowest team round since shooting a 278 in the opening round of this same tournament a year ago. The Volunteers, however, turned in a 272 to move into first place on the leaderboard.

Wake Forest's closest competitors are ACC rivals Clemson and NC State, as well as Florida, who are all tied for third place with a nine-under 567. Thirteen of the 18 teams are sitting at even or under par heading into the final round.

Individually, junior Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) leads the Deacons with a seven-under 137 (69-68), and is tied for third place. He trails field leader David Skinns of Tennessee by four strokes.

The entire Deacon lineup finished the first day of play equal or under par. Sophomore Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) is in 12th with a five-under 139 (69-70). Senior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) is two strokes back of Haas, in 22nd place with a three-under 141 (71-70). Juniors Chris Yoder (Ashland, Ohio) and Cortland Lowe, playing in his hometown of Augusta, are tied for 35th with an even-par 144. Yoder turned in a 73-71 on Saturday, while Lowe carded a pair of 72s.

The Wake Forest men's golf team, which finished third at last year's Cleveland Golf/ASU Invitational, will tee off beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday for final round action.
